What should I do with my apartment while studying abroad?

I think my parents would pis.sed if I only stayed here for one year (my lease still has 10 more months on it) because I brought a bunch of heavy furniture and it would be very hard to move it out and in somewhere else when I come back.

However, the apartment costs 1400 dollars and it's a studio so I don't know if two people would be willing to split it since there isn't a separate bedroom. Do you think if I post it on craigslist maybe I can rent it out?

I also want to leave my furniture here but not have people use my sofa at the very least. or if they do, I want it covered when they use it (and what if they take the cover off)...or mess something up?

Ideally, I would like to keep my apartment for more than a year, but I also want to study abroad and my parents are going to pay if I'm not living here since it costs so much..at least I don't think they would.

I haven't set a date for studying abroad but I want to ASAP. So maybe January 2012 or August 2012

Some things to consider as alternatives:

It might be only a semester abroad, which lessens the size of the problem.

You could potentially sublease it for less than the full 1400 if that is what it takes to get people in that you feel comfortable about. Eating 200 or 300 a month is better than eating 1400 a month.

You can move your furniture into a storage space in Berkeley and secure a new place when you return.

You can move your soft into a storage locker in Berkeley while you are away, maybe find a really cheap sofa to put into the apartment for when it is being subleased.

That’s a great idea about subleasing for less. I think that might work. I just hope someone takes it if I get into the study abroad program.

it is a strategy that is sometimes needed to sublease for the two summer months, when demand is less than available housing space

You may want to check your lease - does the landlord allow you to sublet? Also, you need to have someone who can follow up if the person you sublet to doesn’t get the rent in on time
