I am having trouble deciding on my career. I have about a dozen careers that I am interested in, and they are all quite interesting. So I really don't know what to pick. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
1.photojournalist
2.economist
3.political scientist
4.director of a museum
5 dean of a college
6.archeologist
7.historian
8.art director of a magazine
9.production designer
10.costume designer
11.film critic
12.military analyst
13director of a zoo
14.marine biologist
But I think my dream job would be intellectually stimulating, stable and let's me travel. I think I would like to be like Indiana Jones or Robert Langdon.

hmmm…

Group 1:
journalist (perhaps photo journalist)
economist
political scientist
historian
military analyst

Group 2:
director of a museum
art director of a magazine
production designer
costume designer
film critic

Group 3:
director of a zoo
marine biologist

Group 4:
archeologist
dean of a college

I put group 1 together, because you can basically do all of those in one career. I know people that study economics, military things, politics, and history… and then they write about them. They are academics, foreign correspondents, government policymakers, and government analysts.

I put group 2 together because they make the “I like art” group. This group is EXTREMELY difficult to break into. For instance, you can’t really just finish college and magically be a film critic.

I put group 3 together, because they are animal related. That said, being a zoo director and actually working with animals are completely different jobs.

Group 4 was basically the leftover group. Being an archeologist seems glamorous (world travel, researching rare findings, etc). It is also extremely tedious and not at all how it is portrayed in Indiana Jones. Being a college dean seems to be random in your list, but it kind of goes with running a zoo or magazine. Like the art jobs, you cannot just get a college degree and magically become a dean.

… so, I think my Group 1 has the most options to pursue for a career (disclosure: I am partial to Group 1 because I fall into this group). That said, don’t think just because you do something for your career means you can’t do other stuff! For example, do you really want to be a film critic? or do you just like to watch lots of movies? You can also read about history and culture and economics outside of your day job. You can enjoy art magazines and the zoo.

I’m just trying to think out loud for you.

Good advice … also, just putting it out there, there is nothing wrong with pursuing passions and seeing where they lead you. I’m currently in the process of falling into a career (I’ve got a good job with a lot of upward mobility, and it is turning into my career!)
