For the January SAT I, I got
Reading 800
Math 740
Writing 790 (12 on the essay)

As a sophomore, I was hoping to get the SAT done with. Now I have to decide whether or not to take it a second time. I got 231 on the PSAT (80 on math), so I know I am capable of scoring higher in math. I just don't know if it is worth the extra effort to boost my 2330 or if I could score that high on reading and writing again. Right now I am just sick of it.

For pretty much any college I don't think you have that much to worry about.

Even if you're a prospective math or science major, colleges know that crap happens and the curve on the math is killer. As long as you demonstrate to them through other ways (800 math level 2, A's in higher-level math) that you're indeed competent in math, I think you'll be fine anywhere.

You also run the risk of looking like a perfectionistic testing machine if you take it again.

chunlin, AMAZING job. Seriously. The only reason I can see in your retaking would be for a shot at a 2400 and even then, only retake once and make sure your SAT 2s and grades are good before worrying about the SAT I again. Generally, scores tend to improve greatly between sophomore and junior years and if you feel that your other test scores and stuff are good, retake if you want to. However, a 2330 is defintely good for any college (incluiding Ivies).

Before you retake, do a little research into a concept known as "regression towards the mean." Your score is fine and could go in verbal and writing next time, since those two scores don't have anywhere "up" to do.
