What should I do?

Long story short: I want to major in accounting–however, its a ‘competitive’ major. i had a talk with my academic advisor and she said that it wasn’t ‘possible’ for me to get in (and to basically not apply) given my bad GPA and record of retaking classes. I will have to retake 4 college classes for the THIRD time and i’ve already retaken 2 classes in the past.

I have a few options
-try to get my classes retroactively withdrawn, and retake my classes
-flunk out of college
-find a different major

i guess what i’m really asking is… should i try to at least retake it and apply? and try even though she clearly said it was nearly impossible?

Do you have to apply to the business school with a minimum gpa?

@philbegas So i’m aleady in the business school. But in order to be an accounting major i need a 3.4 gpa–which i don’t have rn

Oh gotcha. What’s your GPA?

@philbegas roughly 2.6. but i’m confident that i can get it up to a 3.4 or higher if i retake those classes. Question is: i just don’t understand why retaking classes is so frowned upon. Is there anything you can see that would help my admission chances?

my admission committee will only be looking at my transcript and a brief personal statement.Their criteria is:
getting into the business school (DONE)
B or high in accounting I (DONE)
B or higher in math I (had to retake, but DONE)
3.4 university GPA

any insights that are different from my academic advisors?

If you’re retaking classes for the third time it’s probably indicative of a larger issue than just school. Either a lack of knowledge in the subject area or perhaps a mental block due to anxiety, depression, etc.

Agree with @philbegas. There is a big gap from 2.6 to 3.4, and when you say that you can get it there re-taking 4 classes, that math is tough to figure out. What year are you? Let me guess that you are finishing up your sophomore year and have about a 60 credit hours (maybe less with all your retakes). If you got Cs &D s in those 4 classes – let’s say 12 credits, for a 1.5 average, that means that the rest of your 48 credits have a 2.875 average. In this scenario, the math works to get you to exactly a 3.4 IF you get As in all 4 of those classes…one A- or B and it does not. Given your history, it just seems like you are trying too hard to fit your square peg in a round hole.

In my opinion, the best thing to do would be to figure out what you are trying to do with your degree within the business school (in terms of career) and go back to the advisor saying “Given that the accounting program is not a reasonable alternative for me at this time, what are my best programs/areas of focus to get where I want to go.” Also, look at the classes that you have gotten A’s in and make sure to take more of those types in your last two years to raise your GPA and prepare yourself for a career in what you are GOOD at.

Yep^ And I don’t mean to be harsh, because I understand the struggle. I had a 1.105 community college gpa when I dropped out in 2013, then I rejoined in 2015, retook classes, and now I have a 3.756 (about to go up again after this semester methinks). I definitely was super depressed before dropping out though, and that’s why I suggest doing some self reflection.
