@Groundwork2022… what do you mean “drop back down after a quarter?”
You can drop from honors back to college prep.
@Groundwork2022… at my school, once you’re in a honors class, you can’t drop out! I’m currently taking Spanish 2 honors and its easy. I’m just lost
I see. DD’s school is more flexible when it comes to dropping down (it is harder to bump up). I still say try the honors chemistry. It seems to interest you, and it is a useful subject.
@Groundwork2022… thanks for the useful and helpful information. I just emailed the science teachers at my school to see what they say.
I found bio to be easier than chem, and chem doesn’t really involve any of the same information learned in bio. Unless you are doing some organic chemistry, we did a unit on it and that’s the only time that bio really came in handy.
We all need luck; no reason to be offended.
I say that Bio is easier than Chem because that’s been the experience of the vast majority of kids I’ve taught over the years, as well as my own 3.
Bio is heavily dependent on memorization. (Nope, not entirely memorization. But more heavily dependent.) Chem is so much more than that. Chem can be difficult to understand for many kids.
If you happen to be female make sure that your mom isn’t having some unconscious bias about you doing honors science. Go for it and drop back if you have to.
@bopper… Actually I am female and I don’t think my mother has that problem! At my school, once you get in honors class, you can’t drop out.
I still say go for it…if you have problems, get a tutor, see your teacher for extra help and watch Khan Academy Videos
@bopper… thanks for the helpful information… I will see if that helps.
Good Evening guys, I talked to the chemistry honors teacher and she said that it is more math based than biology. She also said that you have to have great math skills and be a good student (not cheating off of anybody and paying attention in class). She even assured me by saying, “I say try it. You’ll do fine. No worries.” Then the teacher asked the class, “Guys, is honors chemistry fun?” The whole entire class lit up and said, “Yaaaaaay!” One of my friends who’s a junior said, “You have to have great math skills like I do.”
It’s sad when a teacher needs to make such an obvious statement.
I had to approve my daughter not having a gym class this year and taking an extra science. Typically at our school, especially for non-AP, is a parents opinion and 25 cents is worth 25 cents.
@skieurope :))
@Nicki20… can you explain your comment? I don’t understand. So you’re saying a parent’s opinion is worth a quarter? I’m so confused
It means that the parent’s opinion has no value.
@bjkmom… Wait, wait, wait, let me make sure I understand you. If a parent’s opinion has no value, then why do they make their opinion? To me my mother’s opinion has very high value.
I am also in the “go for it” camp, but I think to clarify the math skills needed…it’s very helpful to be quick at math. Honors Chemistry can be very time consuming if you are not fast at computation imho.
Typically for Honors Chemistry if a teacher recommends you for the course the counselor will approve it based on the teachers recommendation. My daughter is taking AP chemistry and AP biology next year. in that case a teacher had to recommend it and a parent approval was needed to take those courses.
