I agree with teachandmom. You really cannot afford this school… my point in my previous post about needing a cosigner with a significant income was not clear enough.

thanks for all the info.

also i just came across a website:
[College Search - Parsons The New School for Design - Parsons - Cost & Financial Aid](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)

in the financial aid section, are those numbers for all 4 years or just 1 year?
because 30k seems pretty high to me as an average

thanks

Those numbers are for one year. Every year you will get a new financial aid award.

thats the main reason i wanted to ask about this.
because i remember the average i saw before was pretty high and i know my efc is pretty low so i was just kind of surprised then i guess by how little i got compared to the average they give out.

My younger D’s EFC is $2800. The balance due at her college is much higher.

Call the financial aid office to make sure there is nothing missing hugs

thanks i hope i would get somewhere close to the average then it would work out much better.
may i ask what school your younger d is planning to go to?

She started at Brooklyn College her freshman year, and now she is at Smith College for her sophomore year. Her balance due this year was about $8000, and her older brother’s balance due at Stevens IT was about $20,000.

Where else did you apply charlottecc?

i applied to a lot of places and so far i got into cal poly slo, u of oregon, uc santa cruz, uc irvine, asu.
but parsons is my number one school so i really want to go there.

Call them, honey. You really have nothing to lose.

Tell them that Parsons is your first choice, but unless you are given at least another $35,000 each year in scholarships or grants, there is no way you could ever afford it.

They might offer more, but be prepared to choose another school if they don’t.

thanks a lot for all the help. i will try to call them tomorrow, it is just a little annoying due to the time difference i have to call in the morning before school.

Charlotte, you have to call Parsons. Maybe there is a financial aid component of your package that has yet to be released. The award given to you is just the merit award, as the message says, and what the federal government will give you according to your FAFSA EFC. There is no financial aid money from Parsons itself in the package. It would be wonderful if an additional grant is in the works for you. If not, the school is likely to offer you and your parents loans. Your loans would likely have to be co signed by your parents since the maximum Stafford loan has been listed already. Good luck. I hope you get good news from Parsons.

thanks for all the replies.
i just want to give everyone an update.
i found out i still need to fill out a verification form for the school before my package is finalized.
i’m hoping there are more aid on the way:]

charlottecc I hope they give you good news hugs Thanks for the update.

I’m planning to transfer to Parsons this fall, and also I got accepted. I’ve submitted my FAFSA already and it says I may be eligible for Pell grants- $5,550 and Direct Stafford Loan- $5,500. My parents income is below $30,000 because most of their money are in Asia. I was wondering how much money I can get from Financial aid/Student Loans/scholarship(my grades aren’t that good).

Thanks btw how do I post my own topic, I’ve been trying to figure out

* My parents income is below $30,000 because most of their money are in Asia. *

Did you include the Asia money on FAFSA?

Either way, you’re not going to get much from Parsons. You’ll be expected to pay for most of the costs. Schools like Parsons do not have much aid to give.

charlottecc, the package appears to be a complete package. That is a very generous federal FA package even though Parsons didn’t add much scholarship/grant (which is likely to do with your academic stat).
One item could be there is “work-study”. Perhaps you can discuss with Parsons’ FA counselor and see whether they can work something out to provide you “work-study”.

All of your parents’ income and investments world-wide should have been accounted for in the FAFSA. If they are US citizens or permanent residents who are currently working overseas, there is a certain amount of foreign income protection allowed when they file their federal tax returns, so that will be covered with their AGI. If they own property outside the US that is not the home that they live in, it would be considered an investment for FAFSA, and needs to have its evaluation converted to USD at the exchange of the day that you file the FAFSA. The same needs to be done for any foreign bank accounts, stocks, etc.

Schools like Parsons (specialty) do not have much/any institutional aid to give. Some might give “some” merit for exceptional portfolios…but those aren’t usually for large amounts and aren’t often given.

Students who go to these specialty schools generally have to pay full freight or near full freight.
