I'm currently a political science major but I changed my career focus a few months ago. What major should I choose if I want to be an academic advisor for high school students? And will I need a Master's?

I looked into being a guidance counselor for a little while, which I’m assuming is another phrase for what you mean. Most liberal arts majors are acceptable pathways. You’ll need a master’s, so your major is less important. Other majors they suggested were English, History, Anthropology, Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Women’s Studies, African Studies…so there’s a lot of options. You usually need to take a few classes in psych no matter what you major in though-- Intro Psych, Developmental Psych, Psych Stats, and Abnormal Psych sound right, I think. If you look into grad school programs it should say on the websites what their exact pre-reqs are. Some schools want different things.

For that, you will likely need to get a masters. In this country, for a lot of masters programs, it doesn’t matter what you get a bachelors in as long as you take courses related to what you want to get your masters in. IMO Psychology or Sociology might be the most helpful.
