What should I major in? Not sure how I should start my college career?

I am starting college next fall and I've been thinking a lot about what I want to be. Ever since I was younger, I always knew I was going to be a doctor and always told people that I would study medicine. However, once I realized how difficult and how much of a commitment medical school as well as being a doctor is, I started having huge doubts. I have always been interested in the human body and am very motivated and studious, but I don't know if that's enough. I don't know if I actually have the passion that you need to get through medical school.I have considered pharmacy, but after doing some research on the career, realized that it does not attract me. I also considered biomedical engineering, but I do not like engineering. The problem is, I know that I want to do something associated with science, specifically biology/health sciences, and I know I want to get a professional degree, but I really cannot think of any other career other than the ones I mentioned, that I could pursue. I do not want to go into college being an open major. I was considering majoring in human physiology because I am interested in studying the human body, but I feel like that would narrow my options too much. I was also thinking about a major in biology, but I do not like all aspects of biology, such as plants, yet it is broad enough that it might expose me to more areas of science. Both fulfill the pre med requirements,if I end up deciding the pursue medicine. Any suggestions for how I should start my college career and what major would be the best for me, especially when it comes to figuring out exactly what I want to do?

Have you considered nursing?

I do agree about thinking about nursing, but I also think you should reconsider the doctor. I’m just a senior, but I want to do pre-med and become a surgeon… I have been on this site for a while and seen what pre-meds and med students say about it being difficult, but are you sure you CAN’T do it? I mean if you’ve wanted this all your life, of course things can change, but being a doctor imo would be the one of most rewarding jobs on earth. From a personal perspective, I also went for a good while though thinking I also couldn’t do it, but eventually that doubt left because I started to believe in myself and that I could do it… Good luck on your decision.

You just need to get some experience with college courses before you can really decide. HS/AP courses and college classes are nothing alike. Try out a few science classes before you decide on anything.

Have you thought about dentistry, physical therapy or even being a physician’s assistant?

What else do you like?

Microbiology. or some other type of medical scientist? Nurse practitioners have full authority to practice like MD’s in many states. Dentist is supposed to be almost as lucrative, with much less work and school from what I’ve read. Hospital administration could work if your’ not set on helping people as much.
