A quick background: I LOVE math. While this may sound extremely nerdy and pretentious, math is a breeze for me. I have participated in Mu Alpha Theta and placed top 10 in the nation. I consistently score 800s on the SAT math. Essentially, i am pretty good at math. I also like science, specifically biology (am currently in the ap biology class with an A+). As for the rest, I enjoy school and work very hard. I take the hardest classes available and am in the top 10% of the grade (my school doesn't release school rankings but I'm on track for Cum laude). The problem is that I am concerned with entering a field that only bores me or pushes me to the extreme. don't get me wrong, I am not afraid of rigorous classes, but I also don't want to apply to Ivy League schools, begin a biology major, only to find out that I am not nearly good enough to become a doctor. Any strategic advice would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Surely you don’t have to know right now. You’ll gain perspective on this when you go to college and start taking classes in different areas.

Strategic advice? Go into your freshman year undecided or as a math major if being undecided makes you uncomfortable. Most colleges make you take an ungodly amount of gen eds and you’ll begin to see which classes interest you, and you won’t have to declare a major until your 3rd year in many cases. Don’t worry about not being challenged; you’d have a hard time finding a graduate of any major who said they had an easy time (not to say some majors aren’t more difficult).

Also, picking a major is not the same as picking a field. You could major in math and go to med school. Or major in biology and go to law school. If you’re a motivated and disciplined person, there is no limit on the number of opportunities you’ll have after you graduate. For now, just be concerned with what interests you.

Major in Math! If you want to go to Med School, you can major in anything you want!
Or Engineering,…maybe Biomedical Engineering/

Well, if you major in biology you don’t have to be a doctor.

If you want to be pre-med, you could major in anything.

I agree that you can go in undeclared and decide later, once you’ve taken some classes in either and/or some related fields.

You could also double major in math and biology. Some select undergrads might have a computational biology focus, in which you would apply mathematics to biological problems. Biomedical engineering is also a really good recommendation.

hey reach for the stars. take risks.

it sounds to me like you want to go into biology and you know you want to go into biology, you’re just hesitating. do it.
if you fail, well hell who cares.

Physics! I love math more than you and chose physics.
And why no ivies?
