I am a high school student who is wondering what to major in. I like physics, math and chemistry. I also like to be creative and inventive. What major suits me. Does chemE work well?
You’d be able to be creative and inventive in most STEM fields, not just engineering (you do need to design experiments in the sciences), so if I were you I’d check out at this point in time as many STEM fields as you can, as it seems that is where your interests lie. That includes engineering disciplines, sciences, and math and applied math.
What you decide on will depend to a large extent on what you like doing - the best way to find out is to learn about different majors and to try out stuff related to them like internships, job shadowing, visiting classes during college tours, etc. Read up on what you’ll learn in the different majors you could possibly be interested in on the internet, contact people working in different STEM fields and say you’re interested in an informational interview, go on college tours, and try to find somewhere to intern and you’ll get an idea of what people in the fields do and from that, if you’re interested in it.
A couple other things: what you major in doesn’t always determine what you do later in life, so it may be okay to major in something you’re interested in that doesn’t align 100% with whatever careers you might be interested in. Also, you might change your mind, a lot, in the next few years, which is okay. Keep an open mind and follow your interests and try not to pigeon-hole yourself.
