What should I major in??

I know it doesn't matter at all what you major in to get into medical school - as long as you fulfill all the prerequisites to get in.

But what I REALLY want to know is this: Does majoring in a non-science not give me as good of a chance of getting in? I know med schools like diversity but does it "look" better if I major in a science as opposed to English or something?

I was going to major in Biology and English-Creative Writing and maybe minor in Journalism - but I don't want to kill myself in college trying to maintain a high GPA. I've heard people have majored in music and got into med school but I just don't want to hurt my chances or "look bad" for lack of a better word. (I'll be a freshman in college next year so I still have time to think).

Thanks - any help will be appreciated.

Your major doesn’t matter whatsoever in admissions as long as you take the prerequisites required for med school. Major in something that will give you something to fall back on if med school doesn’t work out, science or not.

Thanks! That really does help. But now I have another question…

If I majored in biology (or any other science for that matter) would I be better prepared for med school? Or are the prerequisites required to get in enough for me to do well?

You’ll be just as prepared for med school with a music major as you are with a biology major. The material you need to know for the MCAT is all covered in the basic intro classes, and a lot of this material isn’t even used in med school. All they want to know is if you are capable of handling science classes, critical thinking, and other things not necessarily related directly to what you learn.

Okay. Thank you SO much for your help :)

If you choose biology,

you will knock out many prerequisites on the way to your major,

and you will be the most prepared for the mcat.

any other major will require you to take more classes and be less prepared for the mcat.

if you really wanna look good, then be a biology and chemistry double major.

Chemistry is most definitely not for me  Of course, the biology major at my school requires four chemistry courses which I can deal with but that’s about it! I’m more of a biology person any day.

I think I’m still going to go for the bio major and the english-creative writing major. As for Journalism…I’ll try the minor and see how that works out!
