What should I major & minor in?

I'm a freshman at the University of Kentucky. All I did my first year of school was basically get most of the core classes completed because I wasn't for sure want I wanted to do yet. Math has always been my best subject and I don't really want to become an engineer.

I want to work my way up and hopefully become a president or vice president of a bank.

Do you think it would be a good idea to major in accounting and minor in management or maybe reverse the roles? Or is there something else you think I should do? I'm open to anything. Just looking to make sure I go down the right path.

Finance or Economics might be a better choice.
Accounting is mostly making records or reducing tax.
You don’t get to show off your abilities or meet a lot of people.
With finance or economics degree, you can make investments
and if you shine, you definitely have your way up.
Of course, accouting is a much more secure job compared to finance.

What centerklaus says has some truth, but he is wrong with accounting. An accounting degree can also prove excellent for employment in the finance industry (although it’s typically a harder degree).

I’d recommend finance and/or economics. For a minor, pick up either accounting or something related to learning information systems, technology, and Microsoft Office products (especially Excel). The best way to grow in rank at a bank will be eventually going back to school for an MBA and coming in as an associate. The hardest part will be getting that first job out of college. What it will come down to is simply being a top student and demonstrating your ability to learn. Major does not necessarily matter too much in banking as it’s business related and includes some accounting and finance classes. Do what you will get the highest GPA in and enjoy.

How hard would it be to get a double major in accounting and finance? I’m sure both of them would probably require a lot of the same classes wouldn’t they?

It depends on the school. I mean, accounting and finance are definitely related but different subjects. It could be anywhere from 2-3 extra classes all the way to maybe 5-6 extra classes. And yes, a double in finance and accounting would be challenging (but very useful). An great alternative could be a finance major with accounting minor, depending on how many classes an accounting minor takes (at my school, the difference between the accounting minor and major is two classes, tax and audit, so the major is a better choice for not much more work). I guess you’ll have to wait and see to assess your abilities. Your GPA and and leadership experiences/internships will matter a lot for recruitment once you take all the general accounting/finance classes, so pick whatever you will excel in.

I know graduates with degrees in accounting, finance, and economics. All of them were able to get a job doing exactly what they wanted.

Can someone please help?

I am planning on double majoring in International Relations and Economics, and double minoring in Petroleum Engineering and a foreign language. Please can someone tell me if these are good match ups and how hard are they to acquire?

A petroleum engineering minor makes no sense with those other degrees. However, a foreign language minor is a good idea. With a double in IR/economics and a minor in a foreign language, you’d be prepared for anything international related to the country of the language you studied. It’d also be not too hard to do (easy to acquire).
