What should I major/minor in?

Hello everyone,

I'm very interested in attending Law school down the road. My question is what should I major/minor in, in order to get accepted into Law School. I am interested in intellectual property law. I am a college freshman.
Thank you!

for IP a science major is a big plus, not necessarily for admission to LS, but for getting an IP job.

Patent-bar eligible is basically a requirement for IP work. That means a science degree is not just a big plus but required. IP employers are particularly interested in CS and EE majors. I expect CS majors to be less in demand following certain recent SCOTUS rulings, however. I recommend you look into what kind of IP you want to work with then look up practitioners in that area. See what degrees they have and follow suit. Keep in mind that keeping your GPA above a 3.6 is also important, so you may want to also look into easier classes as GPA boosts.

yes, but patent bar is not required for a law firm. Some law firms will hire ‘soft ip’ associates…not recommended, but possible.

Soft IP is almost always handled by the people who do hard IP, at least at the entry level. Soft IP without a science background is so rare as to be not worth going to law school for.

well my son must be a special snowflake then, bcos he was offered two SA’s from highly-ranked firms, with large IP practices, and my son was a Lit major. (And these were at firms that also have MIT/Caltech/top Eng grads…)

He is indeed a special snowflake. He should feel very fortunate. A great many people envy him.
