What Should I Minor In? (Psych Major)

I will be a sophomore next quarter and have decided that I would like to minor in something. A few important things to note:

I will not be upper-div standing until spring quarter 2009. So I cannot take ANY upper-div courses until then (if they require upper-div standing, which ALL psych courses do).

I am almost done with my GE’s and degree pre-requisites, so I will have some flexibility for a minor. :D

I am referring to the counseling aspect of psychology, NOT the research aspect.

Alright, so here’s my dilemma: what minor would be best suited for me? My goal at the moment is to become a straight-up psychologist. You know, get my PsyD down the road. :stuck_out_tongue: But of course I would like to have some further background for when I begin to apply for jobs, whether or not I go on to the PsyD (definitely am getting the M.A. in… something, I REFUSE to stop at just a B.A. in psychology).

Here is UCSD’s course catalog:
[Courses, Curricula, and Programs](http://infopath-1.ucsd.edu/catalog/front/courses.html)

I am looking into “Law and Society” minor, “Health Care-Social Issues” minor, and “Sociology” minors. I can see how each of them would be beneficial to me… Law and Society for if I wanted to go into forensic psych, Health Care if I wanted to go into health care, and sociology for… well, I don’t know exactly, but the upper-divs are interesting and have great ratings. :D

PSYCH GRADS, DOCTORATES, AND POST-DOCS! What, in your experience, would benefit me the most in the long run? I am not looking into research necessarily, more into the counseling aspect. Thank you!

First, it can be possible for you to take upper-division classes. If Webreg won’t let you do it automatically, you can email the psych department, tell them you’re a psych major, have completed the lower-division requirements and wish to take such-and-such class. They should let you into the class.

As for your minor, I have no idea about that. If it were me, I would just minor in something I was interested in. Go see the advisers at the psych department. They would be in the best position to make recommendations.

I’ve spoken to them already about taking upper-divs before being upper-div status, and they basically said it’s not going to happen, that there’s a reason why they want you to be jr/sr status first (the experience, which I’ll admit I don’t have - doesn’t stop me from dreaming!).

But I will talk to them about the minor on Monday. Thank you!
