Hi, all. I'm currently a freshman at Vanderbilt. I want to go pre-law, and my current academic profile is as follows:

3.66 GPA (explainable: death of father and best friend within six months of each other caused grades and mental health to suffer; grades trending up to about a 3.75)
Child Development (primary) major
Russian minor

I'm trying to pick a second major. My top choice right now is philosophy, but I'm also looking at anthropology, sociology, political science (although I'm not particularly excited about this... it was my dad's major and I'd kind of like to avoid that), Earth/environmental studies (environmental law is one of my top choices), and history. Some of the schools I'm looking at include Michigan, Virginia, Tulane, Duke, Notre Dame, Illinois, Georgetown, Indiana, W&M, W&L, and Boston U. I'm OOS at all the public schools (my home state's law school is a joke, barely T-3).

What do you think would be a good choice for my second major? What things could I do to enhance my application and perhaps overcome a rocky first-semester GPA? Thanks!
