Trying to decide between TCNJ, RUTGERS ,MUHLENBERG . I will be doing a premed major. Research and academics are the most important to me. Is muhlenberg worth the extra $25000 in tuition.
No it’s not.
If TCNJ is cheaper than Muhlenberg, it’d be my pick.
Muhlenberg will cost and extra $100,000 in tuition. Save the money and put it towards your medical school costs.
TCNJ is probably slightly better than Rutgers academically, but Rutgers is the best name on your list for access to research opportunities.
I would suggest Rutgers.
Rutgers
for academics and opportunity clearly TCNJ. For example they just placed a grad into Harvard Med. Good enough?
think so. Also makes sense $.
sorry, I braincramped. did not have coffee yet today. i change my top choice to TCNJ. i do not believe Muhlenberg is worth $25K more than either TCNJ or RU.
@confusedcharlie Yes, in my opinion it is. It is because it is a smaller college with 3k students. You won’t be weeded out like you will at Rutgers and be part of a rat race. My son attended a private university with 5k students and 3 of his friends attended NJ state schools and they all dropped out after 1 semester. They couldn’t compete with the harsh weed out process. We were also advised by a student who attended Rutgers who was a top student. He said his friends all had to drop out as well and they didn’t party. They studied and were just weeded out due to the harsh grading! He said it was a huge blow to their self esteem and a waste of money as well. He begged us not to consider Rutgers for our children. I totally agree… the state universities are a mess. They are lacking funds so they enroll as many students as they can and then they get funding for a couple years and then push you out when the funding stops. My son on the other hand went on to graduate and is working at the top software co. in the world. He was offered everything from TA, co-ops, research, internships, a free masters, etc. Its all because of his close relationships with his professors and that was due to the smaller college environment. They don’t weed you out at smaller colleges… instead they want to help you succeed. There is a vast difference between privates and state universities. Why do you think top schools like Harvard, Princeton, Rice, WashU, ND, etc. average in 5k in class size? There are a lot of benefits to a smaller private university.
However, if you cannot afford it then its a different story. I would attend the cheapest option and don’t take as many classes and get through it. Attend summer school or use your AP credits if you can to make it easier for you.
Good luck!
TCNJ is basically a small school and its premed is well known . Just placed a grad in Harvard med.
It’s a great choice, congratulations.
