What should I take? Chem 20A or CS 31

Hi guys, I am a EE major with biomedical option freshmen. Right now my schedule is set to CS 31, Math 31A, and English Comp 2i. The orientation counselor told me to take CS 31 and use my AP credit to petition Chem 20A so I can go straight to Chem 20B in the winter.

My problem is that I am planning to switch my major to bioengineering. I emailed the bioengineering counselor and he recommend me not to skip Chem 20A and replace CS 31 with it this fall. Should I do that?

So basically I have 2 options:

1) Go with the nice schedule I have right now, including CS 31. Skip Chem 20A and go straight for Chem 20B in the winter.

2) Cancel CS 31 and replace it with Chem 20A. Now I am stuck with Baugh for Chem 20A instead of Scerri. I could have easily switched if I knew cause I was at orientation 101. Now the classes are almost full =/.

Chem 20A was a useless class, but then again I’m a MechE. Chem 20B is more like AP Chem, and if you have to take Chem 20L you will find out that you don’t need to apply any concepts from 20A, just stuff that you learn in 20B.

Thanks for the suggestions. My main concern is by not taking Chem 20A, would this screw up my chemistry track? I have to take a lot of chem classes later on anyways.

Can someone who have taken a lot of chemistry classes answer my question please? Thank you so much!

Not taking chem 20a won’t necessarily screw up your track. I feel that if you take chem 20a though and especially if you want to switch into bioengineering like I did, i highly recommend you take it just as a way to show the engineering school you can handle the major itself. Chem 20a is more different not necessarily harder (lot of quantum and bonding type of stuff).

If you really don’t want to take chem 20a, then i’d actually suggest that you’d take a GE instead of CS 31. CS 31 is not the best class to take during the fall because the majority of the class will be CS majors who are actually interested in the material or typically very good at it.

Lastly, if you end of up taking chem 20a, you actually could get scerri if you are watchful during the rest of the orientation times. They’ll probably open up more spots in his class.

There is no way more spots are opening up when there are 350+ students in the class

Thanks for all your help! I think I might just stick with my current schedule. In terms of CS 31, I think I would stick with it too because I took 3 years of computer science at high school. So hopefully it shouldn’t be a problem.

I recommend taking Chem 20A instead of CS 31. Since you’re thinking of switching to bioengineering, you would need to take a lot of chem classes (basically all except 30C), so you don’t want to fall behind on that, just in case your petition does not go through. As for CS 31, you would only need to take either just 31 (bioengineering) or 31 and 32 (EE). You can catch up on either of those fairly easily. So in my opinion, you should play it safe and take chem 20A.
