My oldest brother is starting to ask me questions about my college plans. I told him about wanting to apply to BU (I left out the ED part) and go for EE, but I was disappointed with his response!

He said that if I wanted to go for EE, that I should at least choose a school that was reputable.

The reason why I even considered BU was because my Digital Electronics teacher did EE at BU, and she speaks highly of it and blah blah blah. Also, I’ve always seen myself in Boston. Always always always.

So how is BU with EE? Is it at least reputable? Should I go somewhere closer to home, like UT Austin? I know Austin is held higher in rank for ENG than BU, but Boston is where I want to be.

Help? I’m in the middle of my application process and I have no idea what I’m going to do.

If you are thinking of going to grad school, then maybe consider going to UT Austin over BU. Or maybe do vice versa. I think you should try to include UT Austin in your long term plans, its a terrific school for engineering (so i am told). You would probably end up paying less for college as well, which is a plus for undergrad.

Weight out EVERYTHING though. Academics aside, view the environment, view the student body, view the class sizes, view every possible thing that can affect you and weigh your decisions.

BU has a good program, I hear. The difference is that Austin is a major chip design area and UT has put a lot of resources over a lot of time into their program. It’s highly regarded, but the idea that BU isn’t well regarded is wrong.

If you’re paying instate Texas tuition, that’s a no-brainer. But there’s no reason not to go where you want - or at least apply and see what you think later on. It’s your life.

BU does have a good program, but it is lower ranked than some other schools. If Boston is where you always seen yourself and where you want to be, that may be more important than rankings.
