Hi. I'm an international student and I have an interview with MIT. I think appearance has a huge impact on first impression. So, what should I wear? Should I wear red and grey (MIT colors), formal wear or causal? And I'm having it in the interview's workplace (I resume, since s/he asked me to come to a business tower).

Any suggestions?

And any advice regarding the actual interview?

I suggest dress pants, dress shirt and a tie. Are you sure it's a workplace? Because sometimes they schedule interviews at meeting rooms. I interviewed for USC when they came to Chicago and they held it at a hotel.

Wear something dressy that is subdued but also represents your personality. I would not suggest a "personality" tie either, I know MIT is nerdy, but those ties are so tacky...a solid tie looks much more put together. Assuming you're male...

If you're female, I would suggest 2"ish heels and a nice pencil skirt with a tucked-in blouse. Very classic and memorable.

Psh I always look great in black and white, and it's simple yet elegent. Also, you can have nice make up and earrings to match. But if you find it too bland, then you can have a sweater top over the white shirt.

Aww catsushi, I didn't mean to insult. I just think of black&white for waiters/waitresses because...I am a waitress. Haha. ALSO...

I played a fashion designer in a play and my costume was black and white and I just got really sick of it, so if you want to add some "spalsh" to your outfit, really pick a color...

But if you're really in doubt, go with simple black&white.

PANTYHOSE! Omg don't go bare-legged to an interview. Just don't.

you want to look nice but you also want to look like you... anyone can dress in a nice/simple black and white outfit.. wear something with a little more personality that still looks appropriate

I think stark black and white is too boring. I'm not saying to wear bright blue or something, but you could change it up a bit fromt he same old-same old.

If you want to wear pants, try some houndstooth or gray with a light pinstripe and an oxford (idk if they have H&M where you are but they have great trousers). Personally, I would add a simple v-neck sweater over the oxford in a color that suits your skintone, or just one that you like, but that's up to you. And for shoes just simple black pumps or nice flats if you're tall.

If you want to wear a skirt I agree with the pencil skirt and a blouse or sweater. If you wear a skirt I'd go with pumps or if you hate wearing heels, then some nice pointy-toe flats would do.

I'd probably end up wearing my houndstooth dress pants, patent black pumps, white oxford, mustard-ish color v-neck sweater that everyone compliments me on b/c of the color, hahaha. oh and pearls. they're my signature =P

Reply to Jolie: Lol, you're right about black and white being kind of waiter-y. I guess it's a perception, because when I think of black and white I think of formal concerts and The Limited. Both classy and elegent. :)

alamode: And for shoes just simple black pumps or nice flats if you're tall.

Um, excuse me? Tall girls can wear heels just the same as short ones. In fact, it's MORE appropriate to wear heels in proportion to your height (i.e. short girls wear flats/lower heels because if they wear tall heels it usually looks like they're playing dress-up). Tall women should not feel that wearing heels and possibly being taller than your interviewer (even if they are male!) is a disadvantage.

If anything it's an advantage--having enough confidence to NOT hide your statuesque frame in flats will only help you all the more.

Okay, the tall chick is done ranting. It irks me when people assume tall girls CAN'T wear heels for some strange reason. Like being tall is something that should be kept to a "minimum."

Oh, and catsushi, I AGREE with The Limited/concert attire comparison.

ahaha, sorry i didnt mean it like that. it just so happens that a few of my close friends are tall and they prefer to wear flats as opposed to heels
i was just offering it as an option =)
truce?

Haha, I do I do. And of course, truce! I could tell you weren't trying to be nasty about it like SOME girls...

For some reason little "petite" chicks like to bash on taller girls and insinuate that "extra" height connotates a lack of femininity, social acceptance, attractiveness, etc...and I'm like, puh-lease, you're as tall as my legs, girl.

It's not like I DON'T wear flats, because they are incredibly comfortable, but I feel most confident when I'm like 6 feet tall in heels prancing around like an Amazon. Rawr. Hahaha

I wore purple shorts to my interview. I however kept it dressy with a nice cashmere scarf. My interviewer appreciated my energy and daring wardrobe choice to the extent that she mentioned how fantastic her interview with a "boy with purple shorts" was to a few of her peers.
