What should I wear to a local reception?

I'm thinking about just wearing some casual clothes, but I'm afraid of showing up and seeing everyone else wearing suit and tie! The reception will have current parents and students, alumni, accepted seniors, and prospective students.

What do you think?

Carleton, suit and tie at a casual reception? The image is somehow incongruous…

You can never go wrong with nice casual - khakis and a collared shirt.

Just directly ask the people who are putting it on. But I’d assume it would just be casual.

I totally agree with fireflyscout. Khakis, a collared shirt and a smile. No suit. No tie.

Well, I’m hosting one and I was planning on wearing khakis and a polo…and a big smile because I’ll have survived the prep and it’ll be time to enjoy all the neat people.

bingle, if I lived closer (this is an assumption on where you live, but a pretty safe one I think), I’d volunteer to make biscotti for the reception.

Hey, thanks for the offer, limner. But you’re right, TN is a little far to drive for a CA event:) It’s supposed to be 90 today and tomorrow, but fortunately will drop to the mid-60’s by the weekend so we won’t all wilt.

Glad to hear you’ll have more temperate weather for the reception. I’m cherishing the (unusual) cooler weather we’re having right now. It’ll be hot enough soon enough.
