My dream school is CSULA and i know that Nursing is an impacted major. Based on my CSU GPA (3.941) and SAT score (910), my EI rate is 4062.8. For the ACT (scored 16), its a 948.2. Should i apply to the Nursing major or Public Health and/or Health Sciences, maybe all 3??? Can i still become a nurse as a Health Science or Public Health major ???
Are you planning on retaking the SAT or ACT? Doing some studying and retaking a test might be the best thing you can do.
@almaa_card123: I agree with @CheddarcheeseMN that you should focus on retaking your ACT or SAT to make sure you have a solid chance at an acceptance. Any of the above majors will fine as long as you can take your Nursing Pre-req’s. The CSU application only lets you select a 1st choice and alternate major. Pick the major that you think will give the best job prospects in case you are not accepted into Nursing school.
I heard that sometimes the fact that your test scores and GPA don’t match can affect your acceptance. Is that it with my case???
Excluding my chosen major, which is Nursing, what are my chances of being accepted?
If you are applying to the UC’s or private schools, I think the admission officers may question your higher GPA vs lower test scores. With the CSU’s, it really is a numbers game using your CSU GPA and tests scores to determine your eligibility index. You will be ranked based on your EI and major. Acceptances will be made from the highest down until all spots are filled. If you are in the local in-service CSU area then you have priority. Impacted majors will have higher criteria so the higher the EI, the better the chances.
Here is the minimum criteria for CSULA Undeclared with a interest in Nursing:
Freshmen - Incoming freshmen wishing to major in Nursing will be admitted as an “Undeclared with an Interest in Nursing” if they meet all of the following criteria:
o Minimum Cumulative 3.0 High School GPA
o SAT combined math and critical reading score of ≥ 900 or ACT composite score of >20
o Campus Impaction Admission Criteria
Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Admission of students for available space will be determined by a rank ordering that is based on additional eligibility requirements.
Do you think its safer to choose a major other than nursing but also in the Health and or/ Sciences field? @Gumbymom
And i calculated GPA using that website you gave me and i have a 3.5, i then used that GPA to calculate my EI and it is a 3,710. Based on this, what do you think my chances are based on my major? i am a Los Angeles, CA resident
Yes, I believe you can get an acceptance at CSULA but it may not be in your preferred major of Pre-Nursing. I would apply to the Pre-Nursing major and select an alternate major as a backup. Any major that fulfills the following courses to apply for the BSN nursing program will be fine including Health Sciences/Biology/Microbiology etc…
-Human Anatomy and Physiology with lab – I and II -Fundamentals of Chemistry with lab
-Critical Thinking course
-English Composition I
-Statistics-Inferential
-Microbiology with lab
-Public Speaking or Oral Communication
