Im a junior, so ive got time, just trying to get a feel for it. Unweighted gpa 3.88 like 5 honors classes so far (ap not available before jr year), three ap’s this year(apush, ap calc, ap lang) probably four more next year. Three years varsity soccer. I havent taken the sat yet, but based on my stats so far what do you think my sat will have to be to have a pretty good shot at cal poly slo’s engineering school? Middle class white male

I think your answer partially lies within the various threads discussing ED and Regular admission from last year. However, admissions can be confusing because some high stat applicantso don’t get in, and some middling stat applicants do.

For engineering, I’d focus on 30+ on Math ACT, or 700+ on Math SAT. Reading 650+/28+

Cal Poly uses some sort of computerized system in which points are assigned for various criteria. GPA weighted including ALL honors courses (not just the UC approved Honors courses that get +1), ACT or SAT, with Engineering caring more about the Math score, # of math courses since 7th grade. # of science courses, etc. I don’t think anybody has ever seen this point scale published, but it is undoubtedly similar to the one UC Davis and UC San Diego use, and which was explicitly published about three years ago. I don’t think they publish those anymore, for obvious reasons.

Oh, one very important difference between Cal Poly and UCs is that UCs do not count 9th grade in its UC GPA calculation. Cal Poly DOES count 9th grade in its calculation. Therefore, a person with a few C grades in 9th grade but mostly As in 10th and 11th might get into UCSB or UC Davis, but not get into Cal Poly.

Awesome thanks a lot. Anyone else?

Here’s some data:

Preliminary numbers show that for Freshmen entering Fall 2012, Cal Poly accepted 30.7% of Engineering applicants (3,402 accepted/11,082 applied). Enrolled Engineering freshmen had an average GPA of 3.98, ACT of 30, and SAT of 1346 (math and reading only).

Race is prohibited from consideration, so being white doesn’t hurt or help.

It also depends on which engineering you want. There are 3 that are even more difficult than the rest: aerospace, mechanical, and (I forget … I think general engineering). Cal Poly doesn’t really factor ec’s into the admissions process too much. It’s mostly about which courses you took, gpa, and test scores. The test score you need really depends on what your weighted gpa is. Add a point for all AP/Honors classes from 9th thru 11th grades. (Cal Poly SLO is the only CSU that factors in 9th grade grades.)
