What should my son do if his flight home is cancelled due to bad weather?

happily watching a movie (on the bus?!).

Oh yes - savior for those of us who have traveled with kids in HS. We had to take PG13 but we always took movies for the trips. Otherwise you get restless natives :) You just have to ask if the VHS or DVD before you bring the movies. All of the travel buses for hire had the players and screens in them.

I was surprised since our kids did not know there was going to be a bus...they are on this bus because of a cancelled flight (Salt Lake to Jackson WY). Do the rented buses usually come with the movies or do you suppose that one of the kids actually brought a movie with them on a school science/ski trip?

Someone had a laptop and DVD's I bet, but the bus company knows their clientele, and noone wants the natives to get restless or bored......

My Salt Lake to JH bus trip was back in the late 1990's. There was no movie provided.

However, now there are motorcoach fleet leasing of movies and display units. It is a fairly long bus trip (8 hours is my memory) and I imagine the buses might have the movie option since a lot of the people on the buses were families on skiing vacations.

BTY-- JH has had record snow this season. My S was there in mid-January 2008 and it was quote "awesome." If your D skis, she should have a blast. In any event JH in the winter is gorgeous.

It is 10:24 here (8:24 pm in WY) and I haven't had word in over 2 hours. I am rereading all your reassurances to calm my nerves...I tried her cell phone but it goes to voice mail. She hasn't answered text messages either. Intellectually I know that they probably have no cell reception where they currently are but emotionally and physically I am exhausted but cannot close my eyes without the "we are here safe" call that she had promised me.

Like I said, S was there in January. He had cell problems. The reason it is called Jackson Hole is that it is in a valley surrounded by mountains. I can feel your pain, but it is probably cell problems.

I suggest you call the airline and ask for customer assistance and tell them your concern and ask them for a status call. The airline leases the buses. I think they can tell you if there is any problem.

Does your D's school or whoever is the sponsor of the outing have a parent contact phone number? You might try that.

OH yeah---I seem to recall that the bus goes to the airport to let everyone off. Call the JH airport to ask about the status

JUst got the "I am here safe" phone call (10:54 pm). She was annoyed with me that her phone rang during a lecture by the heads of the Science School. The bus took them right to Kelly (to the Teton Science School) which is 10 miles out of Jackson. I now will not speak/hear from her until next week when they leave the school and go to a ski/snowboarding resort in Jackson Hole for the last 4 days of the trip. Wow, I am exhausted. Thank you everyone for sitting up with me tonite on my vigil. This has been a very long day (we got up at 2 AM to get ready to be at school by 4 AM for the bus to the airport!). Good night and Good news.

when my kids travel we have a ritual- they text me when they are through security, when on plane, if they will be delayed taking off (so I can contact someone on the other end if necessary), and when they connect up with who they are to meet...its part of the process...as they got older it was less contacting...but texting is amazing...its quick and simple

It's amazing how much better I feel after a quick, "I'm here!" phone call. My college graduated daughter is often lax about doing that. Since she has been in China she has traveled a bit to SE Asian countries and Korea. While she was fine with sending me her itineraries, she didn't see the reason to call to let me know that she had made it safe and sound to wherever she was going. In her mind, of course she would get to her destination.

When she was home on break recently I told her that I didn't care how much it cost or what time it was, I just wanted to know that she made it back to China. Apparently, she understood and we got a call at 2 am saying she was in her apartment. After that, I could turn off the worry screen in the back of my head. :)
