What should those of us that are rising seniors be doing this summer? Visiting colleges, applying for scholarships, writing essays?

All of the above.

And doing what they like.

And, of course, relaxing. =)

Working? Somebody's gotta pay the bills!

I'm going to TRY to study for the SATs, do a summer thing at JHU, and I'm going to start on my EA app.

It's a great time for community service.

doing an internship!

have some fun

Doing research.

I'm doing dance for a show, going to Cornell Summer College and Harvard SSP, working at my job, and starting apps and essays!

My son is working as a camp counselor all summer. It's a great leadership opportunity and fun, too, because he gets to spend the summer in the mountains with all his counselor buddies from last summer. Plus, he gets paid. No college visits, no SAT prep, no essay writing. He has a couple of books to read for one of his AP classes next year. He will try to squeeze in the reading somehow. It's hard when you are doing campfire programs until late in the evening.

i did none of the above. i went to japan for a month, and came back only to sleep all summer.

Summer is a great time for community service.

Senior years are incredibly busy. Try and get as much done as possible on applications, essays, etc. now while you have time. When deadlines approach, you'll be glad you did.

I second the above comment. The fall of my senior year would've been so much less stressful had I finished my apps over the summer. Also, I would suggest not just completing your ED/EA apps, but do all of them. Look at ALL of the questions asked by the schools you're applying to and write all of them. You might be inspired by a supplemental question on one app and use that answer as your essay of choice on your ED/AP app.

Bad1017:
We can see the apps now? I thought we couldn't see the apps to get started on them until Oct/Nov. Sounds silly, but how can we get started?

i thought they didnt come out with the new common app till july?

write an essay for what? fall admissions haven't started.......

Yeah, that's what I'm wondering....

Maybe they mean look at past essays or typical prompts and write an essay? Like for who the most influential person is in your life...or something.

We should make a list! Haha. I love lists. Do the following the summer before senior year:

1) Study for SATs/ACT if you still need to take them.
2) Pick the colleges you want to apply to.
3) Get a feel for the "college app essay"
4) Figure out who you are going to ask for recs

Feel free to add!

5) Do something interesting--especially something that you can write about in your essay.

I studied abroad at a language school in France, for example.
