What should you do if you're undecided on your major?

I applied to my #1 choice safety school, Indiana University, and got it. Wee :) The thing is, I don't know where else to apply. I have some ideas, but I'm having doubts about what I thought I wanted to do. I've been planning on double majoring in theatre and English. I think I want to be able to teach high school English, and although IU offers a 1 year program that you can come from a BA to get your teacher certification in that subject, I don't know what other colleges offer and what states accept what certification wise. As much as I love theatre, I'm thinking about majoring in English and doing what I have to do certification wise and not putting any focus on theatre, unless as a minor or by taking elective courses if allowed. I'm sure it varies from school to school or state by state, but what do you need to teach an elective at a high school? Lots of our English teachers also teach theatre at my high school, but I can't see them all double majoring.

Then again, teaching isn't my only possibility.. and I could easily change my mind. Plus, I'd give anything to work at a theatre (no matter how small) for pay (no matter how little pay:P). But I suppose that boils down to talent, not your degree anyway, right?

So I guess I should apply to mix of Theatre/English choices and purely academic choices.

From my theatre/english list I think I'm most interested in Oberlin, Wesleyan, Tufts, Muhlenberg, and Northwestern. I also considered Middlebury, Colgate, and Skidmore but they don't seem quite as fitting. Let me know if I missd anywhere I should look in to, I don't think I want to audition because a conservatory program would almost certainly be too intensive. I'm also looking for a school with a dance program that would let me take some courses, not only dance majors.

As for purely academic choices, well, there's pretty much just Notre Dame. It's close to home and a good school so I'd probably feel comfortable there. The only downside to me is their lack of a real theatre major, just their film, television, and theatre major. But being so close to home I could continue taking my singing lessons and dance lessons that I take, and do community theatre here. Some of my theatre/English choices are also great schools though, so I might not need to research any more schools to apply to, but let me know if I've really missed somewhere I should consider. I'm not going to provide my stats, just trust I know how to research my chances :)

Any advice?

Go to IU. They are great in both fields and the overall school will leave you with a ton of options if you change your mind on your major.

Go to a school where nearly every program is very strong -- including english and theatre. From your list, these would be: Oberlin, Wesleyan, Tufts, Northwestern. You'd be able to pursue nearly everything there. Keep in mind that the first three are LACs or LAC-feel universities, while Northwestern has very much a university-feel. Good luck!
