what uw/w gpa values would make you a competive candidate at like the ivys (not HYPSM), and other top schools. (theres much more included in the application which determines admission but looking just at GPA what would you say would be safe)

i think a 90+ UW is good enough for low-ivies,but a 95+ will be a lot more competitive,of course it depends on how challenging your classes are.If you take all regular class ,only a 90+ is not good, but if you take APs,Honors, and still get a 90+,it will fine.

It’s totally about rank, not GPA which varies from school to school. At some High schools a 4.0/95 does not make top 10%!

To give you an idea, at Dartmouth last year, 40% of accepted students were eith number 1 or 2 in their class. When you consider that 40% are athletes, URMs and legacies, the successful unhooked candidate is likely to be at the very top of his class.

Even if your school doesn’t rank (mine doesn’t either), there is still a variety of abilities and grades among the students. The whole philosophy behind ranking is to see how you stack up in comparison to those around you. Colleges are well aware of how difficult the classes at given schools are, whether you submit official ranking or not. It’s more important to be one of the top students in the class, than to know whether you are 3/456 or 6/456.

90 is probably a safe number but it may go lower depending on the mix of courses and other factors the applicant has. I don’t think it is really possible to come up with an exact cuttoff. Clearly 75 is not OK, but is 88 or 89 say, or is 90 too low?

Grading is different at different schools. Top 10 percent is almost necessary. Even if your school doesn’t grade you school know you would be in top 10% if they did. A 90 is usually too low, but some schools have grade deflation. I know one where 6/~320 students got straight A’s each year.

how about if my junior year weighted GPA (my school uses the weighted GPA to rank)is within the top 10 %,but my freshman and sophomore years GPA are not,(but i have an excuse tho…)are they going to NOT penalize my low class rank. (my class rank will probably be like top 11-13 %)
