My grandmother just offered to buy me a TV as a graduation gift. I think I'll get a flat screen to save space (and probably with a built-in DVD player). I just need to know what size I should be looking at. I'll be living in Intl Village, but I believe those rooms are the same size as all the other freshman dorms. Also, I think I'll be renting a micro-fridge... so I just want to make sure I can fit everything. I definitely don't need a huge TV or anything... just wondering what the biggest I can go is. Thanks in advance! :)

LOL. My son lived in WVF freshmen year and took a 42" TV. He has moved to the other dorms since and has always made it fit. Definitely doesn’t have to be that big though.

OMG! That’s hilarious… my mom was just scoping out 15"s for me, hahahaha.

I definitely don’t want one that’s going to take up that much space… my roommate and I decided that we’d both like one on the smaller side… but since my dear grandmother is buying it for me, I figured I should get one that will be decently sized for future use :)

You can get good deals on 19" flat panels w/dvd combo… that should be big enough. Both my daughters have gotten by very well with this.

Yeah, it really depends on what you want… I know people that got MASSIVE tvs, but they always put them in the common rooms of apartment-style dorms. I’m sure if you sacrificed some space you could put a huge tv on your desk… A 19 inch would be perfect though.

Be warned! People do steal things in dorms, and they break things even more often. I haven’t heard of something like a tv getting stolen, but I can imagine a room with someone who can afford (even if its their grandmother) a huge tv being a target. I would suggest (although this goes even if you got a small tv) that you be really careful when a bunch of people are in your room. It sounds like common sense, but my roommate last year was playing beer pong in my room when I wasn’t there and got everything soaked. When I got home the next morning and saw the place, there was a shirt half-draped over my OPEN laptop that was on my desk from the night before. She considered vaguely putting a shirt over an open laptop would protect it completely while the rest of the room got destroyed. College students can be pretty stupid…

Thanks for the advice everyone! For some reason, I’m more concerned about my DVDs getting stolen rather than the TV… I’ve spent the last 2 years getting my current collection, so I’m just trying to figure out how many DVDs to have at once (probably just a few… very few!).

I had a 22’’ Samsung for like $400 that worked great. If you are in either of the Stetsons or White Hall then nothing above a 26" I would say. I saw a couple of kids with 32" and it seemed to take up their entire window sitting ontop of their fridge. If you are lucky enough to get Parcel 18/WVF/Kennedy/153 Hemenway then you should be able to fit a 32" fairly well in it. I moved to 153 Hemenway at the start of the 2nd semester and my 22" fit fine under my bed (lofted), and there was most likely room for a 32".

^I will be living in Parcel 18 (now being called International Village). I don’t think I’ll be going that big, probably getting a 19" one on sale. I have a question about Husky Cable… I know I need to buy the axial cord or whatever, but do they give me a cable box? (Sorry if this is a stupid question lol, I’m not the best with technology…)

Not sure how this relates to your situation but i lived on hemenway and we split the cable between 4 different rooms so it was pretty cheap for all of us. By the way international village aka “the vill” is ridiculously awesome!!!

^^The coaxial cable is all you need, no box required. :)

haha is “the vill” the official nickname?! I’ve been waiting to see how people would shorten it!

Thanks for the info, everyone! You’ve all been very, very helpful :)

19-26 are good because they fit on your dresser as a tv stand. 15 might be hard to see while laying down in bed.

^very good point. I was wondering what I would end up using as a TV stand.
