I basically have three classes back to back so there's no way that I have time to get food. So is there anything that I can bring that won't create too much of a distraction for the people around me?

Any chewy granola bar is good. They don't make any noise (except some of the wrappers do). The crunchy ones are noisy though, so don't get those.

How long are these classes? Are you talking about a 3-hour block or a 9-hour block or something in between?

If it's between three and four-and-a-half hours, I'd bring something that you can eat while going from one class to another. (In other words, something you can get out quickly and then eat with one hand while walking -- a sandwich in a plastic bag, a granola bar, an apple, but not goldfish crackers or an orange) That way it doesn't matter whether you're making noise and you don't have to worry about being disruptive or about juggling a pen, a notebook, and food.

For a 9-hour stretch, I would just do Ensure.

No snacks in class but if you're finishing up when the prof's walking in, that's fine. But I agree with the above. Profs have an unspoken rule that there's no food in class. Drinks are fine.

^That varies WIDELY. The profs at my school don't care.

I take an apple, celery/carrot sticks, and beef jerky

Fruit, a granola bar (not the crunchy Nature's Valley kind), a bowl of oatmeal, etc.

Please don't eat in class. Or at least not next to me.

Why not? I can understand if the food is noisy or smelly, but otherwise, why do you care? Are you on a diet?

Same here. Our profs don't care at all.

I don't know about b@r!um's reason, but some of us really don't like to listen to other people eat. The noise of chewing is one of the worst sounds in the world to me, and always has been. I can barely sit at a table in a quiet room while other people are eating, so eating next to me in class makes it very difficult to focus.

If you're starving and are trying to eat as quietly as possible like the OP, it's ok though, since there's a good reason.

^Understandable, but some foods don't make too much noise. If it's something like nuts then it probably isn't a good idea...

I would suggest a 52 oz rib eye steak. and don't share

Bodacious, that is true.

And for the love of god, no pretzels. This girl in one of my classes chews pretzels so loudly and licks her fingers throughout class, there's so much noise and pretzels smell so it's really hard to block out. >.<

Maybe something like a smoothie? Or the soft oatmeal cookies, or berries of some sort.

I don't think pretzels have an overwhelming odor...

i bring high protein smoothies to class a lot. it makes no noise, and is filling due to all the protein and such. definitely enough for a 4 hour stretch. oh, I also add a granola bar too.

BodaciousG, I don't care if I don't see, hear or smell you eat. Keep in mind that whoever is eating may not be the only one who is hungry in class - especially if it's close to a meal time - and watching someone eat while you are hungry can be a huge distraction, at least for me. If I had to watch you eat while I was hungry, all I could think of would be the lunch menu.

To the OP: as others have suggested above, try to eat in between classes rather than during class. I have back-to-back classes from 10-3 two days a week, and I get by on a snack in between classes and then another snack after classes before dinner. If you must eat in class, please be courteous and sit in the back of the room and eat something that does not smell or make noise.

They do. Especially when they're being chewed.

Nothing crunchy (chips or in a bag that makes a lot of noise). Check with prof and obey school rules regarding classroom eating.

Don't be the jerk rustling the wrapper/crunching your food during the entire class. It's incredibly distracting. The quieter the better.

I do understand the need to eat during class sometimes, just pick something smart like a sandwich or some fruit, not a jumbo bag of barbecue chips.

I love eating in class. Last semester I had a 9 hour block of class twice a week, and me and a friend would always bring in our lunch, fruit, popcorn, etc. because this class was so boring, and we needed something to keep us awake for that (and for lab right after). It was kind of obnoxious, but a sandwich or a granola bar should be fine for most classes. Most professors at my school could care less and understand that a lot of students don't have time to sit down in the cafeteria but want to eat a decent meal.
