I have a high school junior starting to pick material for the next audition cycle. Just wondering if there were any trends this year. Thanks!
I have heard from faculty that âLost in the Brassâ from Band Geeks was very popular this year.
We heard âOne Perfect Momentâ through a lot of doors at NY Unifieds.
Yes, my HS freshman would like to hear what the trends are every season, too. Thank you to all who share an opinion.
Walking around Chicago Unfieds we heard a lot of boys sing Heavenâs Light or Out There from Hunchback.
Some schools actually list songs they do NOT want to hear. My daughter had Always True To You In My Fashion from Kiss Me Kate in her audition repertoire but one of her schools had that on their list of Noâs. Not necessarily because itâs overdone, but more likely that itâs not that age-appropriate.
While Always True to You in My Fashion might be overdone or not age-appropriate, if you are good, you are good, and in the end, thatâs what will count the most. My Dâs very good theater friend growing up from our region, who ended up being her college roomie at NYU, and theyâre still friends, got into college singing this song in her audition and has since been in two Broadway shows and on a few Broadway National Tours.
My sister is on faculty at LIU Post and an adjudicator for the Jimmyâs and Strawhat - she advised all females to remove Right Hand Man from Something Rotten from their repertoire immediately
My S has Heavenâs Light in his book but it wasnât one of his two pieces at Chicago Unifieds and twice he was asked to sing that song as an additional piece ( out of 7 auditions)
My D did âTimes Are Hard For Dreamersâ from AmĂ©lie, and while itâs a great song, we heard it through the wall numerous times at Chicago Unifieds, and then recently she went in for a local non-eq professional audition, and the twenty-something girl, two in front of her, did that one too! I also second âOne Perfect Momentâ and I heard a TON of girls doing âVanilla Ice Creamâ for their classic song. (Two girls in a row at the AMDA audition we were at!)
my daughter was on Deck to go into her Ithaca audition and the girl in the room right before her sang her song, âon the other side of the tracksâ from Little Me. I do not think itâs overdone, I guess this just happens sometimes. She scrambled for a replacement song and was a bit flustered going in. Needless to say, Ithaca isnât inviting her to join their class of '23, lol.
Seem to have an abundance of contemporary ballads in Dâs rep, but uptempo and Golden Age are in short supply. At least itâs only March:)
For all the times I have read donât audition with anything currently on Broadway, I heard a fair amount of songs from Anastasia coming from audition rooms. I too heard One Perfect Moment quite a bit as well. And I am still amazed at how often I hear âGimme, Gimmeâ at any auditions I didnât hear repetition with the gentleman, but it may just have been the rooms I was stationed near at Unifieds.
@El-Cee Thatâs too bad about The Other Side of the Tracks. Itâs a great song and I doubt it is overdone. Just poor coincidence of being back to back with the previous applicant!
@El-Cee EXACTLY the same thing happened at my Dâs Millikin audition with the same song! And- she got redirect (urg) Maybe Other side of the tracks needs to go for a whileâŠ
My S (now a college sophomore) reminded me the other night on the phone about his summer college audition workshop back in 2016. During the two week workshop he had the chance to do a number of songs from his book. He decided to throw in a couple that he figured were âoverdoneâ at auditions to see how the coaches would react. After singing âCorner of the Skyâ to two different coaches, he received the same advice: you should only do what would be considered an âoverdoneâ song if you believe you can do it better than the other 25-30 people who would sing it. Then they both told him they would have no problem if he walked into their audition and sang that song. That feedback gave him the confidence to keep the song in his college audition book.
@El-Cee and @4angels, three years ago, before it was all the rage, my Dâs uptempo audition song was Lost In The Brass. Even though it wasnât a super popular choice that year, the girl right before her Point Park audition at Unifieds sang it. She was momentarily thrown, but decided screw it, thatâs my song Iâm not changing it now and Iâm just going to sing the hell out of it. She got into Point Park, and thatâs where she now attends. So it doesnât always work against you.
We heard a lot of All Falls Down.
Finding Golden Age that is not overdone, yet, resonates with the singer, is quite the challenge.
@VoiceTeacher could you please share anything you noticed this year?
