I know colleges accept people with keeping their state in mind as to keep a general diversity of states represented. If I live in New York state, but am going to California for college, if I transfer to a college in NYC, would they include me in their NY statistics or their CA statistics?

Probably in the NY statistics.

Moving to a state for a school isn’t enough of a reason to claim residency.

Unless you have filed Cal taxes, gotten a drivers license, own property, registered to vote, etc

You are a NY resident.
