Thanks for the info! I had assumed that Allison had set it all up. No worries. It’s not until March. I will email her again and set up a campus tour for that day. :)

Thanks for the info, mom2collegekids.

Want to visit as many colleges as possible, but budgets are always the issue :)

NMSFDad…

Oh good, set up the campus tour online and give Allison that time so she can work around it.

I had assumed that Allison had set it all up.

**Note to anyone reading who is a prospective parent/student: ** You have to set up your campus tour online on the Bama website.

Once you’ve done that, if you want Allison in the Honors College to set up faculty appts and an honors housing tour, then you need to contact her AND give her your campus tour time and date.

To set up a Campus Tour, go here: [Campus Visits - Undergraduate Admissions - The University of Alabama](Visit)

Then, send an email to Allison requesting that she set up appts to meet appropriate faculty (give stats, likely major/career interests, etc):

Here’s a thread about the 4 very different programs in the Honors College.

Seandaddy: Want to visit as many colleges as possible, but budgets are always the issue

I understand. If you’re going to be visiting any colleges on the eastern side of the country, then maybe you could do a “circle trip” and include Bama as a stopping point for a visit (airport would be Birmingham).

Is your child a senior or junior? Is he/she a likely NMF? What is your child’s likely major and career interest?

If I remember correctly, you’re from Northern Cal and were concerned about having a high EFC. Is that correct?

mom2collegekids,

My DS is junior now and got fortunately enough score to be NMSF and possibly NMF. His intended major is political science in the field of international relation, then maybe pursuing law school (not quite for sure yet).

Yes, I’m a little worried about EFC. My initial running was around 20,000 to 25,000. If this is all the money we should pay, this may not be too much burden, but it is always good to save money for his next endeavor.

*My DS is junior now and got fortunately enough score to be NMSF and possibly NMF. *

Once you make NMSF, then your PSAT score is irrelevant. At that point it all depends on:

1) having a decent SAT (usually a 1970+ is enough) and sending the score to NMCorp #0085. The SAT does NOT have to be similar to the PSAT score.

2) having a good GPA (very few C’s for semester grades, no D’s)

3) Filling out the NMSF paperwork and writing a decent essay.

4) Not being a discipline problem at school.

He got 2300+ SAT and 3.97 GPA, so it may fulfil some conditions. Of course he should write a good essay and have great school recommandation, but hope he could manage it.

One question for UA’s political science or related majors, does anyone know the acceptance history to US top law schools?

^^^In the words of one of my son’s high school deans, he’d need to be a felon not to be named a NMF with those stats and grades.

*One question for UA’s political science or related majors, does anyone know the acceptance history to US top law schools? *

Because Bama has a Tier 1 law school, a good number of pre-law students with strong stats simply go there. However, for those who want to attend a T-14 law school (and have the LSAT and GPA to be competitive), they have been successful.

Hey M2CK!

I was just wondering if you could answer a quick question:

I was a commended student for the NM competition this year, but did not make NMSF or NMF unfortunately (missed by a point :[) but I was wondering if that would be detrimental or greatly effect my chances of being selected for CBHP or Fellows, or even just making the interview.

Ive already met with Dr. Sharpe and it went really well, he’s an awesome guy, and he told me not to worry, but i cant help myself.

In any case, I was also writing to say STL, Missouri here–Loud and Proud!

ROLL TIDE! Champs all the way!

Welcome! Another student from St. Louis!

Not being a NMF is not going to hurt you.

You’ve done the right things, and you’ve met with Dr. Sharpe - it always helps to have some “face time” with Dr. S!

Good luck!

Thanks a lot M2CK, you put my mind at ease!

Should I read between the lines and see that meeting w/ certain people on campus beforehand enhances people’s chances of getting certain scholarships/opportunities later?!

If so, this seems grossly unfair for those students who have not been able to attend UA yet…and/or who did not have these personal pre-interviews as part of their tours earlier in the application season. Our tour in Nov was prearranged by our ‘local’ recruiter, and did not include Sharpe or Witt ‘interviews’, yet I have a Presidential Scholar, Honors student, CBHP and UFE applicant…

^^^^^aromom: Our D didn’t have her first visit to campus until just two days prior to and for the UFE interview so I do not think it will be a disadvantage for your student. Our D was able to meet w/the Dir. of IHP/Assoc. Dir of UFE on one of the days prior to the interviews but earlier that morningas we were on the tour and walking campus on our own she began to come down with an allergy to the change in weather form home, by the time of that meeting although it went well she was honestly not at her best (had to request tissues and for the blinds to be dimmed.) Luckily we picked up some allergy meds right after and things cleared up by the actual interviews. My point being…every candidate is honestly very qualified on paper going into CBHP and UFE interviews. I believe there are certain qualities each program is looking for in their students and if your student presents them during the interviews and in their interactions w/all they come into contact w/on the interview weekend I think that counts the most and it is a fair playing field regardless of if it is a students first interactions or not.

*Should I read between the lines and see that meeting w/ certain people on campus beforehand enhances people’s chances of getting certain scholarships/opportunities later?!
*

I don’t think it helps getting scholarships.

However, there’s no way around the fact that when sifting thru hundreds and hundreds of applications, if there’s a name that you know, it’s only human that you might be affected by that…either positively (if the meeting was good) or negatively (if there was a bad vibe).

That said, many get invited to interviews without having met with Dr. S or Dr. Morgan.

Since I didn’t want to start a new thread and this is on the subject of demographics,

I was wondering, is there a site that states the statistics for political affiliation at the University? (Republican, Democrat, Conservative, Liberal, etc) And if not, can someone tell me how the general impression they get from the students? Imo it’s a fairly important aspect of the student body that nobody seems to keep track of.

I doubt that there are any statistics…it’s not like they poll the students to keep such records.

That said, Bama is pretty “middle of the road”…with liberals, conservatives, moderates, etc.

The campus was Obama-land during the '08 election, but I don’t know if it will be again since he’s no longer very popular.

Bumping for our new Colorado visitor and others!

Welcome!!

:)

The visit this last weekend sealed the deal. We are from Tinley Park, Illinois

RTR!

^ Good to see another Illinois student.
