What steps should I take to successfully transfer to Rice?

I applied to Rice in high school and denied freshman admission. There were far too many factors that I realistically knew were not even on par with the rest of the applicants. For example, I had an average unweighted GPA of only 3.5 on a 4 pt scale. Most of the high school applicants that I have read in college related magazines and posts online are around 3.8 and above on a 4 pt scale. My SAT scores were pitiful at best with a 1120 (math and reading) and a 1720 with writing. I also had nothing special to present to them: I didn't play an instrument, wasn't in varsity athletics, didn't hold any notable leadership positions, other than joining a club, or anything else that would make me stand out of the crowd.

However, I have changed quite a bit since high school. I now have a 3.9 college GPA, currently a freshman though, retook my SAT and scored a 1510 =), and hold vice president position to a Hispanic organization.

I know these aren't drastic changes, more like subtle, but since I still really want to go to Rice, I was wondering whether y'all thought my admission chances would be enough this time around for transfer admission.

What do y'all think? Are there any other ways I could improve to better my chances?

Is your current college not working out? Im just curious as to why you want to transfer so bad.

Your response to “Why transfer?” is going to be a significant part of your admission packet. They want a genuine reason and not just the fact that Rice is more reputed than your institution. I transferred in this year, had a 3.8 college GPA. I just used my ACT scores from high school of 31 but i had great recommendations. Also, I had skipped a lot of pre reqs in my previous college and was taking the hardest classes offered for my major. I think you should start thinking about all these things to improve your chances. Also, save your notes and tests and quizzes from all the classes you are taking at your college right now. If you eventually do transfer to Rice, some of the departments give you a hard time on transferring in your credits and demand your class notes and quizzes and such.

Thanks bbaral12! I hope I successfully transfer. I’ve always dreamed of going to Rice for years and since this is my last shot for undergraduate admission, I desperately desire I make it. That was interesting what you told me about conserving notes, quizzes and tests. I will keep them and since I’m only a freshman, I have all of them right now.
