What tests do you take at the FTCAP

or what do you do in general, does anyone know?

the website says tests in english, math, and chemistry.

http://www.psu.edu/dus/ftcap/

Do honors Students still hvae to take these tests?

I would assume that you don't have to take the english one if you're an honors student, since it's mandatory that you have to take eng 30. as for math and chem, unless you ap out of them I believe you do have to take them. Really though, there's no one stopping you from not having a prereq, unless it's required for your major and you need the credit for it.

ah that would be great not to have to take the english one. i hate english exams. doesn't the math just test basic algebra and trig? what if you've already taken calculus... will they take that into account for placement?

if you do decently on the first ftcap math test, they'll make you take another one that can get you out of the 1st semester of calc. not 100% sure that you have to take the basic math one before taking the calc one though. same goes for chem.

astrophysicist, have you decided where to go yet? Anyway, you are very helpful with Penn State info...thanks!

can AP credits exempt you from math testing?

I believe ap credits in calc do exempt you from math testing (ab calc 4+ gets you out of math 140 [1st semester of calc], which is the highest math you can ftcap out of, and bc 3 also gets you out of 140, while bc 4+ get you out of 140 and 141 [2nd semester calc]).

I'd say there's a 95% chance I'll be at psu, but I have yet to hear back from other schools, so I won't be certain until april 1st. 75% tuition discount+schreyer's+terrific astro dept+flexibility to take lots of other classes is looking really good at the moment.

WOW! Was your 75% discount from merit alone, or a total finaid package?

Also, do you have any knowledge of how many freshmen opt out of calc 140 and 141? How do they generally do in the next class?

75% discount= employee tuition discount (my dad works for psu). I think a fair deal of freshmen do opt out of 140/141. Some do take 141 over again if they don't feel they have a solid background. The next class (math 230 or 251, doesn't matter which order you take them in) isn't that hard from what I hear if you're in a regular section, but the honors sections are a lot of work. I know some people who took math 230H last semester who are math geniuses, and their five problems of homework a week took a really, really long time to do (at least five hours). So, if you're not obsessed with math, but did pretty well in b/c calc, I'd recommend trying the regular session of math 230 or 251 first semester, and seeing how you do there.

I see that this year's SHC FTCAP days are May 23 and 24. A few AP-related questions for anyone (not just SHC students) who can answer (AP exam registration is coming up quickly at my school, and the deadline is probably March 17)--->

1) Will I have to submit my AP score report from last school year's testing before those dates to have the credit counted?

2) Will I be able to register for classes that have prereq classes I am "APing" currently, or do they require the scores to be sent to them before they will grant that credit? (this is sort of the same question as #1, but it wouldn't surprise me if they have different policies on the issue) AP exam scores are not available until ~ June 30, if I remember correctly from 2005.

If I have to take the mechanics part of physics for three years in a row (honors last year, AP this year, and then honors at PSU next year), I think I'll scream, lol. I love physics, but it would seem like somewhat of a waste of time.

Many thanks!

Another question: if they ask you to take proficiency tests in math and chemistry, when do you take those? Do you have to take them if you already have AP exam credit from the 2004-2005 school year?

I have a sophomore at PSU. FTCAP testing is on-line. She had to complete it in spite of having taken the AP English exam. I don't think that Penn State accepts AP English for credit, only to help determine your placement in English 015 or 030 (honors). Your FTCAP day this summer will not be a testing day, but rather an orientation and course registration. You'll receive your test results to help you determine which courses you should register for in math, english & science, then meet with an advisor to sign up for courses. I believe SHC FTCAP is early because they get priority registration
