What the devil is a named scolarship?

I've been getting emails all month about the named scholarship and how I should apply for it. Now I have a pretty secure plan with my financial aid already and I don't want to rock that boat; does anyone know what the scholarship entail?

Is it independent of F.A. or is it deducted from it?

Are you a named scholar? i.e. John Jay, Davis, Kluge, and Global (if I recall).

If not, then it’s weird, 'cause I got an email about named scholarships because I’m a John Jay scholar.

As far as I understand it, it is your financial aid award from the college; they just attach a different name to it. It’s theoretically helpful from a networking/resume perspective.

this sums it up well: [Named Scholarship - WikiCU, the Columbia University wiki encyclopedia](Named Scholarship - WikiCU, the Columbia University wiki encyclopedia)

I see: named scholarship =/= named scholar. The administration has really done a good job of clarification!
