The cut-off point for this year's admission is 7576. My points were 7464. I called them for a breakdown for my score and they told i had no points accredited to volunteering hours even though i volunteered for 110 hours from 10th-11th grade. I called them and they said I wasn't elaborate enough in my explanation??..?? what!!.. that 150 points would of bumped me above the cut-off point. OMG They said i wasn't elaborate enough.. i told them that there wasn't enough space to even write that much.. I had much to write but couldn't fit it in there. This is what i put in my description:

"Member of Key Club. Do many events throughout the year to help out the community and its needs. Total 150 Hours. 110 hours from 10th-11th grade."

I asked them about an appeal, but they said it doesn't constitute as a new and compelling information.. they said it was unlikely they will overturn decision because of this... OMG my number 1 and only school..

aww.....that sucks.
sorry to hear that...

uh-oh...i might be facing that same problem, but at ucla...

how idd you find out how many points you had

Call the ucsd admission offices at (858) 822-0790.
Provide your UCSD User ID / PID and they will tell you your points.

So... is this unfair.. or what >.<.. I'm trying to appeal.. this thing.. I want to go to UCSD SOOO BADDDD

I had 8000+ and got rejected (got into NYU though, whatdayaknow?)

I suggest you find something, ANYthing, that's "new and compelling" and appeal, and hopefully the strength of your app + the missed volunteer points + new will put you over the edge.

Good luck.

Yeah the best thing to do is MAKE new information to help your appeal. My college book says start a new club/business/community service organization. Or somehow get printed in the local newspaper.
Good luck!

This is what it says in the following ucsd freshman applicants not offered Admission Faqs. "Additional extracurricular activities or high senior year grades are not basis for the reversal of decisions."

88888, you should appeal anyway. Get the information in proper format and send in an appeal because you have nothing to loose.

If I recently won the regional Academic Decathlon competition and placed 2nd in the state competition, would that be a nice reason to appeal? By my estimations, I should have above 7500 points, but my application may have been a bit vague... I think I'm going to call them tomorrow to ask what my breakdown was as well.

How recent?Call them and appeal even if you don't want to go there. You spent $60 and you deserve your fair chance.

I do want to go there. Called them once earlier in the morning and one earlier in the afternoon

do you play a sport? you could contact a coach.

I play badminton.. Junior varsity not varsity. Wouldn't mean much, ucsd doesn't care about sports.. do they? it's not in the comprehensive review.

If you guys are talking to me, I won the regional competition in early February and placed 2nd in state on March 20th. I'm guessing it would be best if my coaches wrote letters?

I think on the UC application there was a specific section that asked you to list your community service work (it was not a part of the EC section core section). It was like a text box or something in which you could actually write a lot.

I remember not writing anything because I have zero hours of official community service (even though I have volunteered as a private party, I didn't log my hours), which I still regret to this very day (even though I was accepted).

It was on the original application.

If you have it saved, I'd recommend you peruse it for the section.

My memory is a bit vague, so I may be wrong.

^I'm pretty sure that "other section" was to list work experience. I think for Volunteer work, there was a drop down menu of some sort. Can't fully remember though.

At any rate, OP, do you have a club sponsor who could vouch for your hours? Maybe it'd be a good idea to get him or her to send a letter for you.

UCSD most definately does recruit for sports. If you are good enough to be considered they can even still get you in. Go to the UCSD athletic site and look for the recruitment questionaire for your sport. Also find the list of coaches and email the coach a resume.
