What the future holds?

Hi CCers,

I am just going to go to undergrad school next year and have decided to major in math. As in previous threads, I want to go to med school however I was looking at the average GPA and MCAt scores for med school http://www.washington.edu/uaa/advising/downloads/gpamcat.pdf.
These are really high GPAs, and I am worried that as a math major I will not be able to maintain such a high GPA because I heard it was a really difficult major.

As a result, will it be more wise to pick another major? Also, will math take a lot of my time in college and be an overload with the premed courses as well?

(I know this is subjective and can vary tremendously from person to person but personal experiences and any feedback will be of great help)

Respectfully,
a Fellow CCer

I think we are on the same boat kinndaish but here’s my perspective.

Major in what you love. It’s that simple. Believe me, many before u have tried to do the “easier” major for the sake of GPA and ended up not getting accepted in med school and being stuck with a major that has no meaning to them.

A high GPA does have significant effect on the acceptance but it doesn’t guarantee an acceptance. Plus if you really love your major and r genuinely interested in it then you will find a way to do well in it!!

I guess my perspective doesn’t apply to most since I’m international; hence, I’m taking extra precaution considering my undergrad major.

Good luck!

It is hard to get into med school with any major, at least with a Math major if you don’t get in you will still have a marketable undergraduate degree.

Is math your passion? Why do you have to pick a major now?

A lot of majors have merit for a premed. Science majors will have an advantage on the MCAT, but it may be harder to get the GPA. Psychology majors and public health majors look great because medicine is about patients not science and these are very nurturing, but it really doesn’t matter. What do you want to learn? What will you enjoy enough to excel at. Why choose now?

The reason I picked math as my major was because I enjoyed it in high school. I liked many of the problems that my classmates dreaded but i heard mathematics in college is a whole different ball game and now, I am not as confident. The reason I have not picked undecided was I heard stories of people who went undecided and went undecided for a couple of years, which resulted in them slacking and their GPAs dropped drastically.

There is no problem with either declaring math as your major or holding off on declaring until later. You can start by taking some freshmen level math courses and see how it goes first. Talk to the professors, the pre-med advising center, and some upperclass math majors. A certain amount of math is required for pre-med anyway. College level math gets very theoretical at some point so that is why some intended math majors end up switching to another major.
