What the heck? Amherst admissions

kristina, i agree with those rankings lol...i fit under #4 (both categories) and i got in two years ago.

Were you a minority or athlete?

donjuan78, you posted in mid December that you had taken the December ACT and didn't do well so you were going to retake. So you got into Amherst 2 years ago ????????

Business Week waaaay oversimplified the process. Fellow Lord Jeff hopefuls, fret not, the process is definitely more holistic than that!

Thats because i applied as a transfer student (with 40 units i believe; so i was a sophomore) and i am retaking the ACT, since my act score was mediocre and, even though i was accepted to amherst, i didnt go. I have been at my college forever and im barely seeking to transfer again. I bet you were snooping around to see what got me in lol; good thing i would never post my essays around here. I still have the acceptance letter and financial aid award...but even if i send you a pic/scanned acceptance letter, you probably wouldnt believe its me, but it is.

both.

I also agree with froghorn; it is definately a holistic process. However, this holistic process tends to favor non-whites, which makes businessweek also right.

donjuan78, I WAS curious as to what it took to get in as a transfer student as they take so few. What you may call snooping, I call research, lol!

Oh...

I also forgot to mention that I am retaking it because Amherst accepted my scores without writing, and most schools like Upenn require the writing portion.

Lastly, what got me in was the essay. My writing style is unique :); so keep in mind that if your essay blew, say goodbye to amherst lol. A good essay usually makes up for mediocre scores or an ok gpa.

How about an awesome essay (IMO, and that of influential other) and a 12 on the essay, overall >760 on SAT writing? My reading score is well in AC's range, somwhere in the middle (>700). My math is a little low...

Well, i dont know what awesome means...thats very subjective and vague; what one person thinks is awesome, another person could think its terrible. It really depends on the subject that you wrote your essay on.

Also, your scores are high (way higher than mine), so i wouldnt worry about your scores, i would be more worried about what admissions thought of your essay.

Admissions will always get students with 4.0, top 5% of class, 700 M 700 V 700 W, internship at all these companies, but what sets them apart is their way of thinking, and THATS what makes a match or a weak fit.

I wrote my essay on the "overcoming obstacles prompt", which I related to my experiences with physical/emotional disability and my hard-fought quest to surmount them. I can fw it to you, if you are interested (PM me).
Actually, come to think of it, the essay is thing I am LEAST worried about. I guess this is good news.

Ugh, that's not good news. I'm so unsure about my essay. Subjectivity can be annoying...

Kristina, I'll look at yours if you'll look at mine...!

So, while bored and procrastinating my homework (at 12:43am) I stumbled upon this and decided to give a bit of my info. I went to Amherst's Open House back in October and I learned some pretty cool things about how they do admissions, for those who were wondering. Basically, they split the admissions officers up into two groups, and within them are 2-3 readers for each region of the US. Your application will be read by at least 2 officers. Then, all the officers come to the table with pros and cons and discuss each kid (some for greater amount of time then others) until they make up a class. The admissions office looks for everything, not only scores (beware). I got in ED with pretty low scores (for Amherst). They are one of those "whole package" schools.
Good luck though!!

Thanks for the info. Although it's not too reassuring... haha :)

i wrote my essay on stereotyped beliefs have the power to become self fulfilling prophesies for behavior but feel unsure on how it turned out....

Well, if this is any consolation, (which I know it probably won't be), it is out of your hands now. All of it and for all of us...

January's almost gone! Too bad Feb has an extra day this year ... :D

I reeeeeally hope I get in. crosses fingers
