has anybody figured out the purpose of the writing section?

i can understand CR and M, where your critical thinking skills are tested--however, i can see no such reason with the W section.

is it to show colleges you're a good writer? i got an 800 on the W section (79 MC and 11 E)
and I'm a HORRIBLE writer...well, not horrible. but a B+/A- writer. not outstanding.

i'm thinking that this is probably why some colleges only look at CR + M

I think it's more of whether or not you are prepared for college-level writing and communication (clarity, focus, etc.) than how eloquent or creative you are in writing.

I don't think it's as important as the CR and M, probably why a lot of colleges don't look at it anyway.

^ i've gotten a 700 and a 710 on the SAT writing section, but I've gotten two 35's and a 36 on the ACT grammar section.. i've never understood why the SAT writing doesn't work as well for me

I got 6 and 8. Reading a prompt and writing an essay in 25 minutes is something I had never done before and will probably never do again. I don't think something like that is an accurate test of my writing ability (especially since there's such a big gap between my 790 mc and the 8 essay).

I dislike the writing section because I consider myself a pretty decent writer and my scores haven't been stellar (resentful much? perhaps). I appreciate the college board's attempt, but a twenty-minute essay can't be that representative of your overall ability, expecially if you're the kind of person who needs time to write something coherent

My first two times I took the SAT I got below 700 on the writing section and an 8 on both essays, which I thought was weird because I got two 36's on the ACT English section and am generally pretty knowledgeable about grammar. My English teacher couldn't believe I got such low scores.

I have an 800 in writing now, but I still kind of resent that section.
