What The Heck?

I got in! With a 3.4 UW gpa, 660 M-650CRR-620R. Good recs and essay but ordinary ECs.

It seems that some of the NEU decisions were quite arbitrary based on the stats of kids (in my school) who got admitted and the amount of scholarship they got...

Wow...I got in, but now I feel kind of silly for assuming that it was a safety for me, considering that I'm no genius.

I got in, but now I realize it wasn't a guarantee like I thought it was. My SAT and ACT were less than stellar (1140/1700 and a 28), but my GPA was a 4.2 W, 3.96 UW. 5 honors fresh, 3 honors and an AP soph, 3 AP and an honors jr, and 3 AP sr yr.

Your major choice could have something to do with being waitlisted. From what I hear, Business is the hardest major to get into at NEU which means it's the most desired, too.

I also got in early action 1310 SAT 33 ACT 3.5 unweighted GPA 4 AP's and a good amount of EC's (namely being an eagle scout) but 82/310 class rank. But i'm from Ohio which I'm assuming is an under-represented state to a point, so that probably helped me out big time. I too agree that applying EA increased chances of getting accepted. Sorry to hear about your wait-list, hope you get the call.

I applied for Psychology. Do you think that a major factor? I didn't think it was that big there.

Could is have been based on my financial need? I know NEU isn't that great at aid.

As to what someone said about kids from Massachusetts being at a disadvantage... Well, I don't know about regions, but a ton of people from my grade applied to Northeastern (at least 15), and to my knowledge, most of them got in. Don't know whether with honors or if with any scholarships, but they got in.

On the whole, NEU admissions seems a bit random.

word to the wise: ask the university specifically what programs they offer to ease transition for students who enter in spring. had a student who had a very bad experience with spring entrance.

When you say "bad spring admit experience", are you refering specifically to Northeastern?

To reiterate what a few other people have said, NEU admissions can definitely seem random at times. Northeastern's competitiveness is also increasing every year so it's tough to estimate whether it's one's safety, match or reach. To the OP, at first glance your GPA does seem to be on the lower end for NEU but when you mention that people with similar to lower stats got in w/ merit aid, that's definitely a reason to be puzzled if not somewhat upset. Good luck with the whole waitlist thing.
