What times do you need for 3 miles or 1600 meter to have a high chance of getting recruited at ivy leagues? I also heard that they look at your junior time and that sometimes colleges don't really care what a coach thinks about an athlete. Is that true?

[Men’s Track Recruiting Guidelines](Men’s College Track and Field Scholarship Standards | Recruiting Times)

The link doesn’t show the time for 3 miles.

probably at least under 15:00

Get a speed rating of around 180 and you would be recruitable. It depends on the courses you run however timewise as they all differ since you normally don’t run a 5k during track season as a HS runner. I would suggest 14.50ish(on a track) for the 5k however to be recruited.

Well, then according to this website: [2010 United States Cross Country 5000m Rankings - MileSplit United States](<a href=“United States High School Boys Rankings | Outdoor Track And Field 2023 Leaders”>United States High School Boys Rankings | Outdoor Track And Field 2023 Leaders)
only the top 18 guys in the nation will be recruited?

Haha, I don’t know if these other people know much about track/cross country but I highly doubt that you need to run sub-15 in order to be recruited for an Ivy Cross Country team – maybe a school like Stanford, where their runners are ridiculous, but I’m doubting that Columbia is looking for “the best of the best” in terms of their track/cross country team.

I actually know someone who went to Columbia as a runner last year. His main event is the 800, but he still ran the 1600 and 5ks. His 5k time was 16:58, 1600 time was around 4:30, and his 800 time was 1:52. So as you can see, he’s not an Olympian or anything, but he’s definitely good (in the 800 at least).

I only personally know one person who has ever ran under 15 and he is now running at Oklahoma State, one of the top distance colleges in the nation – so I’m really doubting that you’ll need to run sub 15 in order to run at Ivies, who aren’t as focused on sports.

I’ve actually been looking up the same thing (except I’m a girl so the times are different) and the thing that I’ve found has helped the most is going to the school’s website and researching their current runners. They usually have some sort of spread sheet that lists their athlete’s times at certain meets, and then you can just compare your times.

Hope this helped (:

Coolcats is right. Go to the websites to check the times of the current student/athletes. If you’d help the team, the coach will want you.
