I would like to know what you would recommend for me to physically bring to classes. The question is vague, but I would certainly appreciate a variety of opinions on this matter.

Of course, I will require paper and pencil--the usual. But what else? Considering a good mix of humanities and science courses, will bringing a laptop be a boon or a distraction? Is weight minimization important?

I would think it depends on the classes you take. I generally bring a stack of loose leaf paper and plenty of pens/pencils. I find laptops to be distracting during lectures. Some professors don’t even allow them. Depending on the class, sometimes professors put up slides online for you to print out and write notes on, if you wish. Some professors talk pretty quickly, so your pencil/pen probably will never stop moving during the lecture. That’s how it was for me in Math 124 last quarter.

Are you planning on living on campus? I commute about an hour and a half each way, so weight minimization is important to me. I usually bring a binder with notes, and whatever I need for the day. I leave my textbooks at home and check out library-use-only textbooks if I’m going to study. I don’t bring my textbooks to class.

Sometimes, I feel like I need to use my laptop during the day when the libraries/labs are filled up. That’s when I bring my laptop to campus. I don’t take it out during lecture though.

I hope this helps! If you want more information about something specific, just let the forum know :)

i have two type of laptops. the normal type i’d use at home, and the netbook type that I use for class. It’s lightweight and ultra portable and super cheap. Great for taking notes and browsing the web

I am going to be either commuting via bus or carpooling to campus, so I am not going to be able to return home between classes to fetch materials.

I suppose it might be a wise idea to purchase some sort of lightweight laptop with long battery life simply for library use and such, and simply bring along an ample supply of blank notebook paper or a notebook for note-taking.

depends on the class. for humanities type classes, i type lecture notes on my laptop. you can’t really do that for math or some science imo. nor languages, for them i write whatever randomly on handouts or in the book but i don’t really need too many additional notes for language.

i commute about 30 min each way and transporting my computer everyday is a bit of a b*tch but it’s worth it, at least for my classes, and if i have gaps in my schedule or something.
