For all you current students...what would you suggest bringing to campus that might not be on the "list"? Now I'm not talking about things that just wouldn't make an official list (!) but rather the "real list" of things you are glad you had or wish you brought. There was a discussion on whether to bring your own printer or not that got me going on this...so, what do you think??? Thanks!

Absolute essentials: TV, Fridge, Futon, Computer. You should basically be good with just those (and your standard toiletries and bed linens). Anything else after that is just gravy.

In other news, I recommend a printer, for sheer convenience, but you could definitely live without one.

Bring posters and all sorts of things to liven up your room. Be creative. Bring Christmas lights. One of my friends had a signed photo from a stripper. It's all good.

EDIT: thought you wanted the real list...I should read posts first.

Carpet is an essential in my mind, or at least a big rug. Many of the chairs are also not that comfortable, so a chair for your desk (or la-z-boy as I had) helps a lot as well. I will try to think of more later.

Bring an umbrella, rain boots, snow boots, and a warm winter coat.

I brought a printer this year and hardly used it, so I am not taking it back next year. Then again, my dorm has a printer, so I can imagine that if yours doesn't, you would need to bring your own.

along those lines, bring snowpants. They came in handy.

what are snowpantss?

seriously

Pants for snow.

sleeping bag? According to son-a must for any out-of-town trips!

oh you're so funny PCB.

Psh. Snowpants are for wimps.

I'd suggest bringing one of those little hot pots to boil water. They are technicially not allowed in the dorms, but they really come in handy for making ramen, hot chocolate, tea, easy mac or pretty much anything else you would actually be cooking in your dorm room.

also, a bike isnt a necessity, but if you're lazy like me, it can get pretty old walking from mod-quad all the way down to the old health services building (behind the Rock)...this may depend on what dorm you're put in, but i definitely would hate to have to walk from West Quad all the way to the Stepan Center for an 8 am chem exam (i remember times when it was raining or snowing/frigidly cold, this walk is agony even for me...and my dorm is one of the closest to Stepan)

Also, as far as bikes go, keep in mind your classes. If you're science/pre-med/engineering, you're most likely going to have classes in Jordan, which is a pretty long hike, so you might want some form of transportation.

Psh. Hot pots are for wimps.

hmmm

What if you were wearing snow pants while using a hot pot? wimp central

hah, youll change your mind come this winter...its seriously depressing haha

why aren't micowaves allowed they seem much safer than a hot pot.

Haha, well hot pots aren't allowed either. But they are smaller and easier to hide...

Snow pants have two long legs of quilted nylon, and a bib overall front with suspenders. They go over your regular pants. I guess they're the same as ski-pants. They keep your pants dry, especially at the cuffs which otherwise brush through snow and melt into freezing water once you get inside for class.

Hot pots are...oh never mind.

Microwaves use up lots of energy and often the dorms don't have the kind of voltage needed at the room plugs, so it blows fuses in the dorms. Maybe newer dorms have better electrical capacity? Anyway, I think that's why they'd disallow microwaves.

Hot plates could start a fire, with their open electric coil. But hot pots..if that is just a plug=in electric teakettle that boils water, seems really harmless to me.
Then you could pour all that boiling water to make ramen, some kinds of hot chocolate, or instant soups. Tea, also.

thanks for the description of the snow pants

I may just have to go out and buy some....I believe the 105 weather today will be suitable
