I'll be attending Berkeley in the fall :) I've browsed well (meaning googled) lists of things kids bring and should not bring, but those were from years ago, and times change. Anways, with regards to the minifridge and microwave, the policy is that we must rent one from the school's approved vendor, but we should just sneak in our own, right? I mean, unless the school officials go around hunting for those kinds of things. I kinda feel like I won't get to eat much depending solely on the standard meal plan, so I want to stock up on veggies and the like in my fridge. With that in mind, how big should I get the fridge?
I also want to take my tv and xbox with me, but I'm debating which to bring. Should I bring the bulky but small television with the screen the size of a small computer monitor or the notso bulky flatscreen that will take up space because of its larger screen...

Sorry for the mouthfull lol

Lists of things: Those are everywhere, just look it up. You need clothes, bedding, toiletries, technology, and whatever else everyone says to bring. If you can think of things you’ll want, pack those. If you see things on a list you would never use, don’t bother.

Fridge: I rented last year, in my experience Micro101 was awful. It took them 4 weeks to bring the fridge. We couldn’t get in contact with them at all during that time. The school kept saying they didn’t know anything because they weren’t related to the fridge company, despite telling us not to bring our own and that we had to rent. Then we found out they messed up, gave our fridge to someone else, and we got stuck with the more expensive model. Then there was some roommate drama. (She said nothing, moved out, kept keys, stole the fridge, completely unable to be contacted… was bad. RA and RD were no help.) When trying to sort it out, we found out they had screwed up the order altogether, and it was a huge mess to sort out. Then it took them another 3 weeks to deliver the new fridge… which they decided to deliver at like 8am. That fridge didn’t work and it took another couple weeks to get that fixed. Overall, 0/10, would not rent again. Other students on the floor just brought their own fridges, was much easier. Sorry, ranting… fridge rentals were bad.

Bring your own fridge… much less hassle, no long waits, probably cheaper, and less trouble if someone disappears. Your RA’s not going to rat you out or anything for bringing your own. For size, go for standard mini-fridge. Small enough to fit in the room, big enough to share with your roommate. I also liked having a microwave.

TV: How far away from school do you live? Would it be feasible to move in and get settled, and then decide which TV you want? If you’re close enough to school (like, within an hour’s drive) it might be easiest just to bring the TV a bit later, when you know what your space looks like.

In regards to the TV, it depends on the size of the room. My roommates and I had a TV in our U3 triple, and it took up a bit of space on our shared desk. Ours would be more like your first option, a smaller screen size, but bulkier in the back.

If however you have a larger room in CKC, you can probably bring the larger one. I would definitely recommend bringing a TV though, it makes your room very popular, especially if you also have a gaming system/netflix-capable device.

Bring a fan if possible. It can get pretty hot and rooms aren’t air conditioned (at least not in my room @ Foothill)
