What should I bring to Berkeley? I heard that first years usually bring too much.

A laptop? A Calculator? Other things?

What should I bring to Berkeley? I heard that first years usually bring too much.

A laptop? A Calculator? Other things?

Laptop and calculator would be quite useful.

No. Nothing. Don't even bring clothes or toiletries. A laptop and a calculator are all that you need. (At least, some hardcore engineering types might actually argue that as a serious argument)

First of all, contact your roommates to ask them about the Big 3 - minifridge, TV, and microwave. It's stupid for both (or all 3) of you to bring redundancies of those things, so work that out first.

Another thing you may want to discuss is a printer. My roommate and I shared a printer just fine; he simply downloaded the necessary drivers and I let him use the printer, as long as he used his own printing paper. It really sucks when the computer clusters close and you can't print something that you really need.

Then think about your basic needs - clothes, bedding, HAMPER, toiletries.

Then think about your school needs - laptop, desk lamp, POWER STRIP (bring two just in case), extension cords, ETHERNET CABLE, pens/pencils/notebooks/paper/stapler/whatever.

Bring only what you think you'll absolutely be using, because yes, First Years do tend to bring too much and storage space is at an absolute premium, especially if you're in a triple.

From my experience, I just went to Ned's to buy any writing implements and paper products that I needed - a little overpriced, but that way I only buy what I need and I don't waste storage space. I didn't bring too many clothes because storage space was limited - I brought maybe two weeks' worth of clothing, plus my formal dress stuff, and it worked just fine for me. Of course, that meant I had to do laundry more often, but that's a good thing anyways since it's really, really gross to have sweaty, damp clothing sitting in a hamper for a month (trust me, I've experienced that smell first hand from my stupid friend who never showered).

After that, if you're into gaming or movies or whatnot, discuss entertainment options - gaming consoles, DVD (Blu-Ray? Is anybody that far ahead yet?) players, whatever, because those are also pointless redundancies.

And bring condoms. Go to Costco and buy a huge pack. Because, good god, they are expensive here.

That's a very useful list tastyb.

How easy is it to order something to your accomodation from eBay or ebuyer or amazon or some such? (That's what I'm basically planning on doing for a lot of stuff).

It's very easy - just know your room address (for example, 2650 Durant Ave, Slottman G12, Berkeley, CA 94704) and order the package to that address. After the package arrives, you'll get a notification slip in your mailbox. Take this notification slip and your Student ID over to the package pickup place and that's it.

Is there room enough for a mini fridge, TV, and printer on top of everything else for a triple? I thought I read somewhere they didn't want you bringing a mini fridge.

I've heard that we're allowed to bring a mini fridge from CalSo.

Do we have to bring telephones? In the units (unit 3, double) do you have to share a phone jack or does each person get their own phone jack?

You don't need phones. However, they're only useful for 510 area code calls. Most people use cell phones

How about phone jacks. I don't know but I might get dial-up to save money.

Duct tape and first aid stuff. You'll be popular on your floor.

If you're a girl...bring things like fingernail polish remover. No one has that kind of crap and don't want to go buy it.

With the exception of halogen lamps (because they catch fire) you can bring pretty much anything. Get bed raisers...and it you're good with tools, you can also undo the bed and move the pegs so it's really tall...you can put the fridge under the bed. Tada.

You CAN'T get dial-up. It's not like you get to pick and choose what service providers you use; you get school T3, and you don't have a choice. It's just really stupid, however, that they charge you for phone service no matter what even though NOBODY uses the phones. And there's no reason to use the phones if you have a cell phone.

LOL Dial-up in a dorm room? Please tell me you're joking. You're $10,000+ housing cost includes T3 internet, utilities, and toilet paper. The budget cuts aren't that bad yet!

SoCal people, bring umbrellas. Surprising as it is, we get rain in NorCal (and lots of it)

Bring a car. They have TONS of parking everywhere!

Not to mention the roads in Berkeley are all fixed and paved and driving is such a joy. No confusing one-way streets sprinkled randomly in this town, no sirree. Driving is such a joy here!

Plus, the town really loves Cal students. The police don't look for reasons to ticket students while driving, not at all.

lovin' the sarcasm.

sarcasm ? ?

sarcasm ? ? ?

dinnertime ? ? ? ?
