What to bring to berkeley??

Hello everyone.

So i'm pretty sure that there's some post somewhere on CC that lists out a list of what to bring, but I think that every school varies because of the environment and the weather so I was wondering if some current Cal students could narrow down the list. Also, I plan on buying a whole new wardrobe to celebrate getting into Cal so if you guys, specifically the ladies at Cal, could provide me specifics of what to get. I went to Berkeley once a long time ago and I think that some current opinions on this matter would help out with my shopping list.

Thanks and I hope to see you all at Cal Day!!!

p.s. I'm getting a laptop but I'm deciding among a HP, Sony Vaio, or Mac. I plan on majoring in some business field so please take that into consideration. Some help on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

This is what I find “bare minimum” of what you need/stuff I absolutely need:

Shoes:
–Three pairs of boots: rainboots, uggs, another pair for normal wear
–Sneakers/good walking shoes
–Flats
–Heels - closed-toed ones for business events, strappy ones for dances/social events
–Sandals/Flipflops (one pair of flipflops for shower definitely!)

A solid good umbrella
A business suit or something formal for networking events
Jackets - one that goes with more formal outfits (usually peacoat will do), one for more casual
Cardigan/Sweaters
A dress or two for social events
Enough clothes to last me two weeks without doing laundry

I’ll add more when I think of more.

thanks!
anyone else? (:

Be prepared to dress in layers.
Electronics:
Laptop w/ cord
Extension cords/splitter
Ethernet cable, 25 ft. long or wireless router
Printer
Monitor (optional)
External HD
Speakers AND earphones

Here’s a really comprehensive list.

do you really need to bring a printer? can’t you just print your papers somewhere on campus?

I think so, but having your own printer is just more convenient and I’m guessing you’d have to pay to use a school printer.

either way your paying for ink; i’d rather not take one since it uses up precious space.

For laptop help, i’d suggest you go to forums.notebookreview.com and fill out the questionnaire. Simply saying i’m majoring in business doesn’t narrow anything down.

The Scholar Workstation has a few pages. I believe one of them lists Haas recommended hardware, so you should probably take a look at that.

As for clothes… girls here tend to dress city grunge, college student, label or “cute.” Depends on your group, really, and no one cares in the end (unless you choose to hang around people who do!). It gets cold for a few months during the year, mainly winter, and can rain a lot. It rarely gets below 40 or above 80. It’s sometimes windy, but not frequently. Best reason for layers is that there’s often a marine layer in the AM which burns out by the middle of the day and starts creeping in again in the evenings. Doesn’t always happen, though.

Weather can change at the drop of a hat over the course of two days. Earlier this week for example: was 70 degrees, beautiful and sunny. The next day was cloudy, chilly, grey and very rainy.

stly’s specific list looks pretty good. You are really going to want comfortable walking shoes if you have to walk up the hill several times a day or run between classes.
