I know this thread may sound like something quickly answerable with common sense, but I want some advice from Berkeley students about what and how much to bring.

Also, is there anything out of the ordinary that one wouldn't normally bring that might actually be of help?

Is there anything I shouldn't bring that can be easily bought at the student store instead? Do I need to bring a desk lamp? Do the benefits of bringing your own printer outweigh the costs of it taking too much space?

I dunno, stuff like that.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Water filter. Normally, berkeley has great tap water, but the massive pipes in the units give it an off taste. Much cheaper than buying bottled water. Unless you’re one of those weird people who don’t like water…

plenty of light and heavy jackets/sweaters. weather is cold in the morning (even in the summer) and heats up considerably during the day (unless it’s winter).

The student store sells school supplies, not dorm room necessities, and it’s a little pricey.

Personally, I didn’t use a water filter. The water fountain in the Units didn’t taste great, but it wasn’t that bad, either. It was still better than that nasty eco-bottled **** Arrowhead makes nowadays.

A desk lamp is an absolute must if you plan on doing any work in your room at all in the evenings. So yes, you need one. Lighting inside the rooms is pretty dim in the Units, even if you move your desk directly under the in-room lamp, which you probably won’t.

First semester I didn’t bring a printer. I used printing pages at the ASC, which is a pretty good deal - $5 for 250 pages, I believe. You can also get 250 free printing pages a semester at the OCF in Eshleman Hall, if you’re willing to walk all the way over there. In general, if you’re a finishes-papers-two-minutes-after-they’re-due kind of guy, bringing your own printer is probably wiser because the ASC is not open 24/7. Second semester I brought my own printer just in case, although I barely used it since I had leftover pages from the ASC. My roommate, however, was a procrastinator to the highest degree, and used my printer all the time. Not bringing a printer may motivate you to not procrastinate so much on those papers and lab reports, since you’ll have to plan beforehand in order to finish it so you can print it out at the ASC while it’s open.

If you have a ton of clothes, bring extra hangers or borrow from your roommate(s). A fridge is very useful. And bring a shower caddy and shower shoes (unless you like showering barefoot in the dorm bathrooms…).

Bring waterproof shoes. If you’re from SoCal, Berkeley will seem like Portland or Seattle to you. But it really doesn’t rain excessively…

That’s all I can think of. You’ll get by… And if not, there’s a Walgreens next to campus and a Target in Albany that you can get to by bus.

Besides all the necessities, you should bring a camera. If you don’t already have one, buy one now or wait until Thanksgiving break. You will regret not bringing one.

?!? Why do you want to waste your precious meal points on something that you can get from the faucet ?!? Fine in all seriousness, bottled water (Dasani) is about $1.29 and you can purchase it at all campus/ non-campus eateries

yes you can, at the GBC and other locations. I think arrowhead was a little over a dollar. It’s always a bit more expensive then the items would be at a “normal” store.

i agree with those earlier, water filter is cool. whats even cooler is that now the recreational sports facility has this station where you can bring bottles or nalgenes and load up with water. i go there and drink like 3 bottles hahaha. anyways bring comfortable “warm” clothing and a large appetite because your gonna have to fight off wild bears from crossroads.

DO NOT GET A WIRELESS ROUTER IF YOU WANT ULTRA SPEED INTERNET. wireless sucks. unless you get the super wireless ones.
the ethernet cord is much much faster.
i LIKE!

^ yea but if you have multiple internet using devices a router is a must. Most 802.11g routers can handle the speed of dorm internet lines without bottlenecking
