What to bring to Duke?

Is there a list with the general supplies we should all bring? I've seen other colleges give a full list of what the students should bring.

There was a list for us somewhere on the orientation website, but it wasn't that intense or anything. I personally used a list from the College Life board here (I think its still up there). It was MASSIVE so I just kind of weeded through what I needed to have and what I didn't need. It worked out fine and I had everything I could ever want.

you'll need the same things at duke that you need anywhere else that you've lived, home for example. if you read in bed at home, you'll probably read in bed at duke so bring a lamp to put next to you bed. if you like to sleep with a lot of covers and blankets at home, there's no reason that would change once you get to your dorm room, so bring a bunch of blankets with you. overall, just use your common sense. if you get to duke and find that something is amiss - there is a bed bath and beyond and a home depot each 5 minutes away and a target and walmart each 10 minutes away...so you can get anything you don't already have.

if you need supplies at Home Depot or Bed, Bath, and Beyond or even groceries somewhere locally, how do you get there? besides borrowing a car or carpooling with someone else, is there a bus system or anything else convenient?

Borrowing cars/carpooling is really the only option, but I know with my dorm so many people had to go the first week that there was always someone to bum a ride off of, and eventually once you find a group of friends to hang out with more consistently, I can almost guarantee there will be someone with a car. It's challenging sometimes, but you learn to live.

Also, if we're just talking groceries the east campus store has a few things if you just need to grab something quick, and there's a Whole Foods right across from east campus if you don't mind slightly more expensive, organic food. lol.

but the food is so good there! Check out the cheese and sushi departments...hooray whole foods!

does any1 ever order groceries online?

Oh no I'm not saying Whole Foods isn't the greatest place of all time, but it's just something you have to prefer.

My friends and I had our last Duke meal at Whole Foods. I <3 <3 <3 <3 their sushi!!

Bring Makeup!!! :) Guys u can too if you want to

paniwani- my friend ordered groceries online (from uncle harry's the grocery store on central campus) and she's probably the only person that i've seen do it. the food has a bit of an upcharge, but it was really convenient for her (it initially started sophomore year when she lived on the 4th floor and didn't want to lug everything upstairs) and she thinks it's worth the extra $$ in food points.

sphinxs as a guy what make up should i be using?

i dont think i should ask my guy friends about this...

well ozym (i was using my sis char earlier). i think maybe you need to bring somee blush, maybe a bright red lipstick, and of course my favorite mascara and perhaps some eyeliner. Hmmm concealer would be good if you want to hide acne and other blemishes. Yep you should go to ur local CVS and buy some makeup (Go to CVS haha i work there...) So anyways that what i got to say right now.

Quick question: I'll be in Southgate next year, and it says that my room will have a carpet. Do I have to buy my own vacuum, or will there be one in the dorm that we use?

I know my dorm didn't have one. I invested in a cheap $19.99 one from Linens and Things...it worked really well. I mean, no one else had a vacuum so it ended up being the 2nd floor girls vacuum, so you can take the chance that someone else will have one, but if you see one for cheap I'd get it because it's a convenient thing to have.

My dorm had its own vacuum. I think that a lot of people asked our dorm's House Council or maybe the Graduate Assistant to buy one for us. I used it once because I was too lazy to go downstairs, sign it out, and all that good stuff. I just used a brush and a dust pan for my room, and that worked fine. Then again, I had hardwood flooring. If you have carpet, I'd say go ahead and invest in the vacuum that loveduke got.
