What to bring to UVa

Does anyone have a check list of items to bring to UVa for the first semester?
My D is going this Fall. She will be in Alderman dorm. Thanks.

[ ] Equipment for velociraptor proofing the dorm room

They have a list on the housing website (virginia.edu/housing), and also on the myuva guidebook (virginia.edu/orientation).

This thread would be cool tohugh if current cavs could tell us first hand what were the disastrous and awesome things people brought.

http://www.virginia.edu/housing/faq.php?faq_id=fy#faq_22

This should be a helpful first step.

If your daughter wants cable, make sure you get a cable splitter just in case if anyone else in the suite wants cable in the room. Get extra clothing storage that can go under a bed for extra clothing that won't fit in the closet. Bring your video game system, period. I had my katana in my room for a while, but that was against the rules. No RA caught me though.

You have to watch out for those velociraptors.

A fan, and a good one at that.....

-Clothes: If she doesn't wear it at home, tell her not to bring it to school. (trust me, I brought so many shirts and dresses and was like oohh i'll wear them!...no)
-buy some of those clear plastic drawer units at target...they're dirt cheap, lightweight, and awesome to organize stuff with
-plastic boxes with tight lids (food)
-fan
-christmas lights for decorating!
-video game system: i wouldn't worry about "waht if I always play it and don't study?"...just bring a few fun multi-player games to play on the weekends in that lull between dinner and going out...plus, its a great way to meet people, especially if no one else around has anything
-microwavable plate/bowl and a mug...it sucks if you always have to borrow
-solo/dixie cups...you just never know

disastrous:
-photo frames: they cause clutter...instead, buy a frame to put on the wall
-brand new $100 heels: first muddy night, ruined
-fridge without a seperate freezer: freezers are super handy...buy a fridge with a big one
-big TV for little shelf: oops
-shelving units that easily came apart: i bought a unit at bed bath and beyond that had plastic thingies that held metal squares together...fell down often when I put all four together
-big laundry baskets: laundry never gets done, because when you finally run out of clothes, you look at the giant pile of laundry and go "heck no!"

things not to bring home once at college:
-drunken debacle pictures
-stale food
-massive amounts of laundry...bring home half, do the other half at school...yes, itll cost you two dollars (in quarters too! that's the worst thing about laundry, is finding 8-10 quarters), but its better than listneing to your parents whine about your "lazy" state of life, when in fact, they should be greatful you study/go to class/feed yourself/sleep daily
-your ABCs: A)lcohol B)ad grades C)ondoms

You'll get a flyer for the combined microfridge. They are expensive, often junky and small.

A lot of students bring their own fridges because one small one usually isn't enough space, plus you avoid turf battles. My roommate moved in before I did and completely filled up the fridge with his organic stuff.

One microwave (though illegal) is enough for both roommates. I ended up buying a good-sized fridge at Costco that can hold 2-liter bottles in the door.

Make sure you coordinate with your roommates/suitemates to see what they are bringing.

Don't bring too much. If in doubt, don't bring it. Target & Wal-Mart stock up big-time for the college kids, as does Bed Bath & Beyond. Last year there were shuttle buses that made runs to Target.

Rather than bringing a TV, think about bringing a second monitor for the computer. If the monitor has HDTV capability or if the computer has a TV tuner card, the second monitor is much more useful.

Small desk lights are good/

If you like music, definitely invest in some nice computer speakers (Klipsch, Harmon Kardon) and/or a pair of high-end headphones (Audio-Technica, etc). You can get a good set of speakers or pair of headphones for ~$150.

Microwaves are illegal?? I gather it's easy to get around this?

Also, does any of the high end electronic gear you suggest end up missing?

you're supposed to have either a microwave, fridge, or a microfridge (which is a combination of the two). You don't need to worry about it though, you can have both of them.

If you are dumb enough to leave your door unlocked, then you run the risk of having high end electronic missing.

The only other things I would suggest are against the rules and could be more utilized for residences with better accommodations like Brown, IRC, Faulkner, and Copeley. I don't acknowledge Hereford and Gooch/Dillard.

how does your daughter know shes in alderman? they dont tell us til july6 i thought

If she is Echols or Rodman, then she is automatically in Webb which is in Alderman.

A pillow....

i know this is a thread somewhere too bc i remember replying to it already.

your room is a lot smaller than you think so don't bring too much. unless you're in brown, and then your room is a lot bigger than you think.

a stepstool is good, a fan, a desk light, storage (in alderman you bring your own box type things to put under your bed), anything to make your organizing easier i would definitely recommend. if in doubt, don't bring it, and either buy it or get it when you go home.

technically posters are illegal too but you should bring those so your room doesn't look depressing. you can just take them down when the fire marshall comes.

echols/rodman, to add onto what uvamalex09 said, are also housed in Watson and Maupin along with Webb. Requesting a roommate where one of you is echols/rodman puts you into Watson, Webb I believe is exclusively scholars while Watson/Maupin are about 50/50.

yes, she's Echols

Speaking of which. Any new news on Brown acceptences? :\Speaking of which. Any new news on Brown acceptences? :
