What to bring-what NOT to bring

My S will move into a dorm in August and I wanted suggestions from people who have been there-what are some things to bring that no one tells you and what do you definitely not need to bring.

For example-a printer? He will be in a quad. I thought I read somewhere that you really don’t need to bring a printer as there are so many places to print from anyway. Is this true? Is there a place in the dorm to print or do they have to go somewhere else?

Any help you can give would be appreciated.

Printing is usually available in the libraries and computer labs- and most students seem to have some free printing through their major. I would still recommend having a printer in the dorms, but maybe he can share one with all of his roommates.

Other than that, everyone should have at least a single set of dishes and cutlery, and remember to bring things like scissors, nail clippers, dish soap, tape, a combination lock, and both dressy clothes and clothes that can be ruined.

As for things you might not consider- a Halloween costume or two is nice to bring for parties, and extra blankets/ pillows are nice if the student has a common room or some other space to hang out in other than their bedroom. The walk to class can be long enough that a really warm coat for the winter is good to have.

I brought and didn’t need several sets of heels, envelopes, blank CDs, and cleaning supplies. It seems like most students also bring too much clothing with them- maybe because they overestimate how much they will be able to fit in their closets.

My son had an all-in-one printer that could scan/print/copy. He did use it to scan and email documents to me on occasion. Otherwise, he could have managed okay using the school printers. His most indispensible tools were his laptop and smart phone. Probably wise to send something to organize the space in the lower half of his closet. Plastic drawers would work. Have him figure out with his roommates who will bring a TV and stand if there’s room for one. Extra long ethernet and co-ax cables are good so you have some options about where things can be situated. One or two power strips can be useful. Duct tape (and scissors) can come in handy. Don’t worry too much about the small stuff because there is a Target and Staples reasonably close. They used to supply a lamp but I’m not sure they do this anymore so you might need a lamp. Don’t bother with drapes because the rooms have them. I agree not to go overboard with clothing- If he will be home at Thanksgiving, he can swap out warm weather gear for his winter wear then.

I think there are many threads about what else to bring so check those out.
