What to bring....

Is it a good idea to bring tennis racquet to Indoc, or should it wait until after Acceptance Day? My son hopes to play Tennis for USMMA. Just wondering if there will be time and anyone who wants to play before Acceptance Day.

Probably best to take it parent's week-end. The less he has when showing up for I-Day, the better. It will get stowed away. They played sports during Indoc though. Maybe some kids can comment for sure. I recall last year, some parents taking lax sticks to their kids on Parent's week-end so that they wouldn't get lost.

As to the air-conditioning, USMMA has been doing some updating & construction projects for the last few years. Its ongoing. Some places have air, some don't yet. When you arrive, you will find out which company & building you have been assigned to.

can we have sleeping bags durring indoc? when i was there for my visit the plebe who i stayed with slept on a sleeping bag? thought it was a good idea he didnt have to make his bunk in the morning.

no sleeping bags during Indoc.

dang... can you sleep ontop of your covers?

you don't sleep under your covers anyways... when you make your bed, you duct tape it to the mattress

If your in 1st, 2nd, or Band Co, you will sleep on top of the sheets, no blankets, you won't need them anyway. If your in 3rd or 4th Co just use the foot blanket, it takes 10 seconds to fold.

yea im in 4th co and at night i was freezing during indoc because my ac was so low

brett ur on the sailing team right,,,,,

when do you bring your gear out? can i bring it to the bbq and leave it at the water front?

yea i brought my stuff down the night before at the bbq. are you thinking dinghy or offshore

im going dinghy.... u know allison D. and peter Mann?

I'm in 1st co, it was so hot during Indoc....don't risk not having a fan.....if you end up in 3d or 4th co you can get rid of it later.

I would have liked to have:

A lighter, extra clear nail polish, duct tape, a picture frame or two, and bring a white shirt that you can tear up into small rags and use for shoe shining and polishing belt buckles. Saftey pins are good, you probably won't need more than a dozen. Try to have a credit card when you get here so if you want to order stuff that you need online after Indoc you can. Also, bring a pen and a few pencils.

If there is any way to bring enough ammonia to soak your belt buckles in, bring AMMONIA. You will be issued two lacquered belt buckles. The belt buckles you are issued need to be de-lacquered . So the DIs will take your belt buckles and soak them in ammonia free of charge.
My problem came after INDOC. All of my belt buckles were scratched pretty bad from our war belts, so I needed new belt buckles for inspection and daily use. They don't sell un-anodized or de- lacquered belt buckles in the varsity shop so you have to soak the buckles in ammonia after you buy new ones. If you can do this only bring about a cup of ammonia in a fully sealed container so it doesn't leak. I don't know if the airlines allow ammonia to be in bags so check before you pack.

for the lighter, nail polish, duct tape and polishing ****...wont the DI's take it from you when they check your bag....

or what type of things do they take from you?

On the list of oddball stuff - probably to bring/get for Parent's weekend - swiffers (easy to clean floor) and plug-in room scents - people get a little stinky with all that activity....

but when reporting to indoc can we bring lighters, nail polish, duct tape, and 100% cotton rags for polishing?

Bring those items if you can. I can't imagine the DIs caring about you having a lighter or a torn up white cotton t-shirt. The DIs don't normally go through your bag anyway. DIs typically wait until you have unloaded your bag and then they decide to rifle through your droors. Bring the stuff so you have what you need when you are here.

"droors"

i think you mean DRAWERS buddy

I don't remember a DI ever going through my bag. Just toss your stuff in the "personal drawers" (you'll see what they are) because they can not go into them. Just wear a lacquered belt buckle after indoc during the school day, and brasso your other one for tattoo if your in uniform. It's easy to tell if you look close, but if someone kept coming that close to that part of my body, well you get the point.

so things in your personal drawers upper class men cant go through...?
